Absolute Beginner English Lesson
Plan
Welcome to the class! Introductions, the
Alphabet, Colors, Days of the Week, and
Goodbyes
Lesson
goals: By the end
of this lesson, students should know the alphabet, spell their
names, introduce themselves, identify colors, days of the week, and
say goodbye (see you
on….)
Level:
Absolute Beginner – Alphabet, colors, hello (introductions),
spelling your name, and
goodbyes.
Instructions
for teachers in
blue.
You can
either copy the contents of this page or download the lesson plan
below. The file you download includes both versions of the lesson
plan – with and without the
instructions.
The answer
sheet is available for download at the bottom of the page, along
with the example homework for this
lesson.
1. Listen and answer. Use your
name.
– Ask a number of students (in smaller groups,
you can ask all students) what their names are, introduce yourself
and welcome students to the
class.
Teacher: Hello,
what’s your name?
|
Student: My name is
____________.
|
Teacher: I’m
______________. Welcome to the
class!
|
Student: Thank
you.
|
2. The alphabet. Listen and
repeat.
– Say each letter and ask students to repeat.
Alternatively, sing a song, to make it more fun. Once you have made
sure that students are already familiar with the English alphabet,
you can encourage them to work in pairs and spell/ pronounce their
names to their partner. (This is especially useful if students do
not know each other.)
3. Listen to the alphabet again. Put the
missing letters in their
places.
– Students listen to the alphabet again and
when they hear a letter, which is missing, they write it down in
its place.
Introducing
colors
If you
choose: Ask a given number of students to each come
to the board. Spell either one color per student or several letters
per student (if you wish to engage more students) and let them
write on the board as you spell the colors black, white, yellow,
green, red, gray, blue (in whatever order). Then move on to the
next activity.
4. Match the colors with the
words.
– Now that students can see the words on the
board, they can easily match them to the colors in this exercise.
In addition, spell and pronounce the colors
together.
Remember!
GrAy is
in America, and
grEy is
in England!

5. Look at the pictures. Write the colors
you see.
– This could turn out to be a lot of fun
(especially if your students are Pokémon Go fans). Four pictures of
Pokémon Go characters are shown below. Students must list all the
colors they see against each character. The idea here is to
encourage students to identify as many colors as they
see.

6. Color the Pokémon Go characters as you
wish. Write what colors you used under each
character.
This is an optional activity, best used with
children, or in case you have enough time. Students use only red,
black, white, green, gray, yellow and blue to color the characters
below. They can use 3 different colors (any of the above) for each
character when they color. When done, they list the colors they’ve
used for each character. You may then ask a number of students what
colors they’ve used for character No 1, 2, 3 and 4. (Of course,
using white here means that the area is not
colored.)

If you
chose: You could ask students to the board, spell
the days of the week for them and let them write. This will improve
their spelling and will help them further memorize the days of the
week.
Time for
Goodbyes!
8. Thank students for the class, and say
goodbye.
– Go round the class and, using the names of
the students, as well as the day you are going to see them again,
say: (Alternatively, you can write it on the board, and help
students read the lines first, and then go round the
class.)
Teacher: Thank you
_______! See you on _________.
Goodbye!
Student:
Thank you!
See you on _________.
Bye!
