Just like nouns, pronouns also relate to a person, thing, place, or idea.
Some examples of pronouns are:
I, we, he, she, you, it, they, my, our, your, his, her, its, their John is absent today because he is ill.
The pronoun "he" is the pronoun that refers to the noun "John."
This is my sister Marie.
The pronoun "my" indicates possessiveness.
Remember that pronouns are incomplete by themselves. They always refer to some person or thing either in the same sentence or in the previous one.
Read the following passage.
New York is the largest city in the United States. More than eight million people live in the Big Apple. New York City is located in the state of New York.
New York City is home to two hundred and fifty museums, four hundred art galleries, and the world famous Broadway for entertainment.In the example above, the noun "New York" is repeated many times. This could exhaust the readers. This is where a pronoun is used to lend variety to the writing.
Hence, the sentences can be rewritten like this:
New York is the largest city in the United States. More than eight million people live in the Big Apple. It is located in the state of New York. It is home to two hundred and fifty museums, four hundred are galleries, and the world famous Broadway for entertainment. As you can see, this is easier to read.
