The revolution began in England in the 18th century and soon spread to Western Europe and the United States. The new machines could do things much faster than before when people worked by hand. In 1764, James Hargreaves invented the "Jenny spinning machine" for twisting thread to make cloth. But the most important invention was James Watt's steam engine, which he built in the 1760s. Engineers began using steam engines to power machines in factories and built the first steamboats and trains. They all needed coal to produce steam, so the coal mining industry also grew rapidly. More and more factories and coal mines sprang up, turning small towns into big cities as people moved there to work. By 1850, half the population of England lived in cities, in poor, overcrowded homes. Men, women and even children worked in factories or mines. Working conditions were difficult and unhealthy, and wages were low. Conditions slowly improved. however, what the factories produced also gave people a better standard of living. One thing's for sure: the Industrial Revolution changed the world forever. Now, make sentences. Exercise 2. Let`s slip into 3 groups. We will now have a team work.
