Learning English on your own is both a difficult and interesting task, especially for those people who are used to achieving their goals in life. If you organize your classes correctly, choose the appropriate methodology and acquire the necessary dictionaries and textbooks, the training will not only be effective, but can also turn into pleasant entertainment. This is the case when the goal justifies the means, because along with the knowledge of the language a person still gets a lot of bonuses: expanding the circle of communication, the ability to read the classics in the original and navigate in an English-speaking country without an interpreter, as well as many other advantages. In this paper, you will see all the ways and methods to learn English.

How to learn English languageMost people are convinced that it is impossible to learn English on their own or at least a little to advance in their knowledge. And the reason for this are stereotypes. Yes Yes! It is the beliefs of others that make us abandon our dreams and they sound like this:• Learning English on your own is an impossible task.• The process of learning to a certain level of knowledge (for example, advanced) is delayed for years.• Everyone who is studying the language at home does not achieve the desired result.• To learn English, you need to dive into the language environment. In fact, all these statements are not unfounded and they only mean one thing: to learn English on your own is quite a difficult and thorny path. And how long it will be, directly depends on what goals and means are used in the learning process.Learning English on your own is both a difficult and interesting task, especially for those people who are used to achieving their goals in life. What hinders language learning? What do you need for those who study English on their own?The self-help of the English language - performs an important function - it provides information in a clearly structured form with its sequential presentation from simple material to more complex. A good tutorial is a textbook that focuses on every aspect of the language you are studying: grammar, reading, pronunciation, listening, writing. Not less important point when choosing a tutorial of the English language should be the convenience of its use and the availability of presentation, the presence of practical exercises, phonetic course and additional audio materials. Independent study of English will only give results if the classes are interesting for you and tutorials evoke positive emotions.English-Russian dictionary is simply necessary for practice. It is best to have such an option in which the meaning of new words is explained by simpler English words. The most popular ones are Longman, Cambridge (Cambridge), Oxford (Oxford), as well as Webster, Collins and Macmillan, but they are all very similar to each other. Longman has more comparison articles, is simpler and more convenient, Oxford is vivid and memorable, and Cambridge has simple and understandable explanations. Which one you choose for yourself is up to you.A grammar textbook is another aspect, without which self-study English will simply be incomplete. He belongs to the ageless classics, and therefore it is impossible to replace him at the moment with anything. Many experts believe that over the years, Raymond Murphy’s grammar textbook has proven its worth. It is quite functional and simple to understand and still occupies a leading position among educational materials. Tutorial Murphy is presented in the form of a grammar reference with reinforcing exercises. It is absolutely not necessary to study it in a certain sequence, you can finish it in one place, and start from a completely different place.Without which it is impossible to independently learn English?Interest is an important driving force of human activity, and it is almost impossible to overestimate its importance in learning English. It is from this aspect that the concentration of attention, the richness of associations and the perception of new material depend, because everything that gives pleasure comes easily and naturally. A person who is engaged on inner motivation, is able to achieve much greater results than the one to whom it was charged to duty.Desire is the second powerful factor that motivates learning. If he goes in tandem with an interest in language or with professional necessity, then he gives quite good results. For desire to become action, a clearly formulated goal is required. First of all, decide for yourself why you need English and how much you need to know it, and also determine for yourself the period during which you will achieve a certain result. Now imagine what opportunities you have to achieve this goal. These may include trips to English-speaking countries, live or virtual communication with native speakers, new methods and modern teaching materials. How to define a goal?Set a goal by asking yourself some leading questions:• Why do you need English?• Want to read the classics in the original?• Want to participate in international conferences?• Maybe you need to correspond with business partners in English?• Or do you want to chat on Skype with foreign friends?• Or maybe you are going to work abroad?Identify for yourself the most important principles of self-study of English:• Motivation (for this you need to strongly want to learn the language).• The learning process (depending on the purpose for which you need knowledge).• The correct technique (you need to choose the best option, suitable for your temperament).• Positive attitude (just does not hurt).• Reading is the mother of learning• Reading allows you to create a picture in your imagination, it activates brain activity and helps to better absorb learning material. Comprehending what you read, you will have to analyze and understand the point of view of the author, this will allow you to better assimilate the material submitted.• Read only texts that you understand, otherwise you will very quickly lose interest in reading.• Pay attention to new words in the text. A large number of unfamiliar expressions in the text suggests that the level of presentation of the material is too high and you may need to choose something simpler.Try to write out all the new words that appear in the text. them while reading, try to guess their meaning and at the end of the process enter them into your dictionary.• It is reading that becomes the benchmark for literate writing. Each text contains the correct structure of expressions and the construction of sentences, this will allow you to subsequently use them correctly in a letter.• Read regularly. Try to read a little, but every day. It is better to read 15 minutes a day than two hours on Sunday.• Watching movies in English is a good combination of business with pleasure.• Everyone knows that watching a movie is a real pleasure. To learn English yourself try to choose the films that you know. Better if they are with subtitles. For each of them, create your own dictionary and enter unfamiliar words and expressions as you watch them.Talk, talk and talk!• First you need to learn to speak the language. The biggest problem that befalls a person learning English is fear. The fear of what does not work, the fear of ignorance and the fear of looking stupid when pronouncing certain English words. Therefore, many students, devoting a lot of time to grammar and reading, prefer not to speak English at all. And it is absolutely in vain! Any training is useless without practice, which is why you need to work on your pronunciation every day.• Proper pronunciation is the key to success!• Pronunciation is the main component of any foreign language, it depends on the correct perception of foreign sounds. Any defects in pronunciation make a person's speech difficult to understand. To learn how to pronounce the sounds of the English language correctly requires constant training during the first months of training. The rules of pronunciation can be learned by comparing them with the rules of the Russian language. Special attention requires the pronunciation of the most difficult sounds, but do not forget about the small rules. In English, stress and intonation are of no small importance, and therefore do not forget to pay attention to these aspects.• Do not forget about grammar• The grammar of the English language is a whole system, without the knowledge of which it is simply impossible to fully master the language. To do this, it is most important to know its basics, rather than superficially getting acquainted with a variety of secondary phenomena. Try to understand how and why the sentence uses one or another grammar rule, as well as memorize examples of its use. What pitfalls do you expect when learning English yourself?• Practically each of us dreamed of learning English on his own, but few have achieved success in this field. Why is this happening? The first and most important problem of independent learning is the lack of control. To distract from the lessons can, anything - a phone call, an interesting film or an invitation to walk. To prevent this from happening, you will have to draw up a clear timetable for yourself and follow it strictly, using common sense and willpower.• Another problem in learning English yourself is mistakes that will later become your habits. To learn a language correctly, you need to be very strict and attentive to yourself. Being engaged with the teacher, you will not be afraid of mistakes, because he will correct you in a timely manner. If you are left alone with the language, the uncorrected error turns into an incorrect construction, which will gradually take root in your speech and writing. Remember - retraining is much more difficult than learning from scratch! All in your hands• So, you have firmly decided to master English on your own and are ready to begin studying it. One of the best methods for successful learning is to surround yourself with an English-speaking environment. Read books in the original, make notes in English, listen to English-language radio, watch movies and news in English. The more material will be around you, the faster and more natural the learning process will be. Not less important aspect is speaking, it is often the one that lags behind those who study English independently. In fact, communication with native speakers and those who study it is not a problem today. It is enough to register on sites where participants practice their pronunciation and find interlocutors for themselves. Remember that everything depends on you.English is great for learning as a second language - for business, travel or personal purposes. Learning any new language requires hard work, determination and willingness to make mistakes, and English is no exception in this sense.Every day, at least speak a little English. The best way to quickly learn a language is to speak it. It doesn't matter if you know just a few words or speak almost fluently - speaking English will be the fastest and most effective way to improve your speaking.• You should not wait when you feel comfortable speaking in English: it can take a lot of time. You just need to start talking right now - going beyond the comfort zone will quickly improve your skills. So fast that you yourself will be surprised.• Excellent practice - communication with a native speaker: find someone whose first language is English and who don’t mind talking to you in a language exchange: 30 minutes of English dialogue, the same amount of time in your language.• If you live in an English-speaking country, simple conversations with people you meet daily will be an excellent practice: for example, you can greet the seller or ask a stranger about the shortest route to your destination.Work on pronunciation. Even if you have good English with good grammar and a large vocabulary, it can be very difficult for an English-speaking person to understand your speech if your pronunciation is far from ideal.• Proper clear pronunciation is essential if you want to achieve good speech. Listen carefully to the pronunciation of individual words and sounds by native English speakers and try to imitate them in this.• Pay special attention to unfamiliar sounds and those that are not in your native language. For example, some people find it difficult to pronounce the sound [r], others have difficulty with the combination of the consonants "th".• It should be remembered that the pronunciation of a word of the English language can vary considerably depending on geography: the same words in different countries sound differently. For example, American English is very different from British. Therefore, if you are planning a trip or moving to an English-speaking country, find out all the details of local pronons.Increase vocabulary and use stable expressions. The more your vocabulary is and the more English phrases you know, the easier it will be for you to speak this language.• We emphasize once again that communication with a native speaker is a great way to make your speech natural and rich. Do not forget about reading, viewing English-language shows and news.• After learning a new word or phrase, try to use it in a sentence - this is the best way to remember a new vocabulary.• And one more easy way to replenish active vocabulary: make shortcuts for home inventory and paste them. Now each time, using a kettle or looking in the mirror, you will see in front of you the English names of these items.• Get a notebook. In it, you will write stable expressions used by native speakers everywhere. For example, “it’s raining cats and dogs” (pouring out like a bucket), “to be on cloud nine” (or “be in the seventh heaven”) or “it is a piece of cake” (it's easier than ever). The use of idiomatic expressions in speech will increase the level of your English by several points.Attend English classes or become a member of a discussion group. This is a great way to speak English more often.• Attendance is compulsory for those who want to concentrate on the formal aspects of the language. Here you will learn grammatically correct speech - learn the structure of the sentence, conjugation of verbs, and also streamline the approach to learning the language.• The discussion group is an excellent platform for training spoken English: here the emphasis is on communication and building relationships with people, and not on the "correctness" of speech. Being in such an environment will allow you to feel comfortable speaking to an audience.• Each of the proposed ways of learning a language has both advantages and disadvantages, so it’s best to use everyone if possible.Do not part with the dictionary. In the form of a book or application for a smartphone - it is useful in any case.• Having a dictionary at hand, if you “get into the pocket after the word,” you will surely pick the right one! The dictionary will save you from an awkward moment: when, during a dialogue with an English-speaking one, you suddenly forget a word, it will take you a few seconds to find it.• In addition, “spying” something in the dictionary and immediately using it in speech, you will increase your active vocabulary.• You can glance to the dictionary at any free minute - sitting in a train, waiting for the “green light” to cross the street, or just having a cup of coffee. With this method you can learn 20-30 English words daily!• Beginners should use the dictionary with the translation into their native language, but as you study it is worth switching to a dictionary of meanings, in which the descriptions to the words are also written in English.Listen to English radio stations or podcasts. Download podcasts and radio applications to your smartphone or player - this is one of the best ways to learn to understand English by ear.• Try to listen to them for at least half an hour a day - in the gym, on the way to work or sitting at the computer.• Actively listen to the sounding speech - it should not be just an English-language “background”. Even if the pace is too high for you, grab keywords or phrases to understand at least the general meaning of what is said.• If possible, write down words or phrases that you did not understand, and then see their translation. After listening to the podcast or radio show again to understand the meaning of new words in the general context.Watch English-language movies and TV shows - this is another, and quite funny, way to improve listening comprehension.• Try to choose films or shows that you like - in this case, learning will not be a chore. If possible, choose to view what you have already seen or are familiar with, for example, children's cartoons or popular films: knowing the plot, it will be easier for you to focus on the perception of the language.• But what to avoid is watching videos with subtitles in your own language - they will distract you from the perception of English speech, and this is the whole point of such exercises.Keep a diary in English. In addition to reading and listening, you should also devote time to work on written speech.• This may be the most difficult, but the most important aspect of learning. When you write in your target language, you work on sentence building, grammar and spelling.• Write in a diary several sentences daily. It is not necessary that it was something deeply personal, write about the weather, what you ate for lunch or plans for the day.• Have a native speaker read what you have written and check for errors - of course, if you are not embarrassed because of this. So you can avoid repeating the same mistakes many times. It is very helpful to find an English-speaking pen-pal - especially if your writing skills and vocabulary allow you to maintain a dialogue.• Such correspondence will allow you to work on writing, and as a bonus there will be a pleasant excitement from receiving letters.• Your friend can be both an English learner and a carrier. In the first case, he can practice learning your language.• Corresponding with a friend from an English-speaking country (for example, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa) will allow you to learn about its culture and how it lives in that corner of the world.Keep motivated. In the process of learning it is important not to stop and not to surrender to the full mastery of English speech.• Fully devote yourself to learning a language, reminding yourself about how badly you want to achieve it. Think of all the amazing possibilities that a good command of English will open to you.• You will be able to communicate with people from all over the world and make new interesting acquaintances, will be able to immerse yourself in the English-speaking culture, this can improve your career.Daily practice. If you want to learn English fluently as early as possible, practice every day.• Repetition is the mother of learning. This is about mastering a new language: by taking long breaks between practical exercises, you risk forgetting what you learned and starting all over again, losing valuable time.• But learning "nausea" is also not worth it. The process should be interesting. To do this, perform different tasks every day: today - reading, tomorrow - listening, then - writing, after - grammar, and so on.• At the same time, never miss an opportunity to practice speaking in English - this is the most important thing in mastering the language.Practice thinking in English. This is the only way to master the language is not just good, but perfectly.• Translation of your own thoughts from your native language to English and back is tiring and time consuming. Each language has its own nuances and specifics, so accurate translation is not always possible.• Therefore, getting used to thinking in English, you will get fluent and natural speech. Make yourself a “switch”: when you need to speak English, just turn on your “English” brain.Make English-speaking friends. One of the best challenges for second language learners is communication with several speakers: you need to be able to understand and maintain a conversation.• The best way to achieve this result is to be friends with English-speaking people and communicate with them in a normal relaxed atmosphere - for example, in a cafe or bar.• In that case, you just have to speak English, but this will not be perceived as work or study — in such an environment you will enjoy it.Do not be afraid to make mistakes. This is one of the biggest obstacles to fluent speech.• From this fear of no benefit - it only keeps you from achieving the goal.• Remember: when learning a new language, everyone makes mistakes - this is normal. You will probably have some awkward situations when you mistakenly say something rude or wrong, take it with humor.• When you learn, remember that your goal is progress, not perfection. Mistakes are part of the learning process that helps you get better; there is nothing to worry about.• Learn the phonetic alphabet (transcription symbols). This will help to pronounce the sounds correctly and speak with the necessary intonation - if you want to make friends with native speakers. For those whose first language is not English, it can be quite difficult.• Writing dictations is a great way to improve spelling and listening comprehension. Ask a friend to read a couple of paragraphs from a book or newspaper and record what you hear. Compare with the original text.• Learn the culture of English speaking countries.• Find someone who can not only speak English, but also teach it. Learn grammar and vocabulary using visual, auditory and conversational exercises. Practice regularly, trying to make your studies interesting.• Memorize all tenses and verb moods. All the necessary information about this you will find in a search engine. You also need to examine the correct agreement of the subject and the predicate. If you incorrectly conjugate verbs, your speech will sound unnatural - native speakers do not say that. And vice versa - grammatically correct speech is very impressive.• If you are thinking about moving to the US, look for language programs in your city (they are often free), get a profession and make English-speaking friends. Americans like confident people. In Britain, however, the combination of useful skills and moderate modesty is more appreciated.• Learn English as a second language at your school.
