Lesson plan



Grade: 10 A – Arykty High School. Arykty village, Korgalzhyn district, Akmola region.

Theme: Past simple and present perfect tenses.

The aim: let the pupils understand the difference from each other and learn the usage of each tense.

Tasks: a) make own sentences and do grammar exercises; b) read the text to understand more about tenses in general; c) do the home task to complete the knowledge.

Student’s Book: “Aspect for Kazakhstan”. Grammar school, grade 10, by Jenny Dooley – Bob Obee (Express Publishing 2019)

Vocabulary: mountaineer; set out; camp; mountain range; goal; summit; vital; conquer; wild; numb; spot; thick; surround; feat; clue; expedition; frozen; equipment; fail; log book; make it; etc.



The procedure of the lesson:

Org. moment: teacher – good morning, dear children. Sit down! Who is on duty today? Who is absent today? What is the reason if any? What date is it today?

Warm-up: how are you doing, all? Are you ready for new lesson? Then, let’s repeat the home task first. Who is ready to read/ answer?

The main part: today we are going to learn more about tenses which we have already learned before. Today’s theme is “past simple and present perfect tenses”. Here is the structure of each tense:

Past simple – the action which happened in the past. Affirmative form created by using verb-2 or with adding “–ed” to regular verbs. We also use adverbs such as “yesterday”, “… ago” and/ or “last …”, etc. For example: Leny learned German language last year.

Negative form created by using did + not + verb-1. For example: Leny did not learn German language last year.


Interrogative form created by using did + noun/pronoun + verb-1 ….? For example: Did Leny learn German language last year?



Present perfect – the action which have finished by present times. Affirmative form created by using have/has + verb-3. We also use adverbs such as “already”, “just” “till now”, “yet”, etc. For example: Leny has already learned German language.


Negative form created by using have/has + not + verb-3. For example: Leny hasn’t learned German language till now.


Interrogative form created by using have/has + noun/pronoun + verb-3. For example: Has Leny learned German language by now?



Focus on reading: read and translate the text “The wildest dream”, p 6.


Exercises: ex 2, p 6 – complete the sentences by using: solved; returned; fought; discovered; set; failed; spotted; conquer.


Grammar practice: do the ex 4, p 6 – orally answer the question and explain why.


Focus on listening: correct pronunciation of: -ough; -ild; - ind; -ee; -ea; -oo; -oa; -augh; -ir; -kn; -all; -ance; etc.

Conclusion: get ready to retell the text using past simple and present perfect tenses and learn the new words
