Unit presentation

Background

A legend is a traditional story, handed down through the generations, the source of which has never been authenticated. Characters from such stories are usually humans and the actions described have no supernatural elements. A knight was a

professional warrior in the Middle Ages. They had a special code of conduct in those days (chivalry). Today it’s a rank of honour which in the UK is given by the monarch. The legendary King Arthur is one of the most famous knights in literature.

Warm up

Books closed. Write knight /naɪt/ on the board. Drill the

pronunciation of the word, pointing out the silent k.

Elicit or teach the meaning of this word. Give students two

minutes to write down as many words related to knights as they can, e.g. horse, fi ght, war, king.

Make sure to revise or teach armour at this stage, as students

will need it to describe the photo in the Students’ Book.

Ask students if they know any books or fi lms about knights.

Ask students to open their books at page 56.

Give students a couple of minutes to answer the three questions about the photograph.

Students can then compare answers in pairs before you check answers with the class.

Tell students that the theme of Unit 5 is how to talk and write about our favourite stories.

Suggested answers

I can see a knight in metal armour. There’s a castle in the background.

It comes from a legend about knights. It’s probably from the

Middle Ages. It could be from the UK or France.

The knight is wearing armour to protect himself from his

enemies. Maybe the country is at war.

I enjoy these stories because they are full of adventures and

brave characters.
