Master
Class
Teaching conditional sentences
in English lessons.
Many of my colleagues believe
that English teachers are in a privileged position. In part, we can
agree with this: in English lessons, the class is divided into
subgroups, English is now very popular, and almost everyone has
already understood that without knowledge of a foreign language, it
is very difficult to exist in the modern world and find a
prestigious job.
Indeed, almost all students
want to learn English, but this does not mean at all. That they all
want to work hard to know the language. Learning English, like
learning any other subject, requires hard, systematic work.
Moreover, the vast majority of students do not have the opportunity
to communicate with native speakers.
The most difficult thing for
Kazakh students is learning English grammar. The tenses system in
English and other grammatical phenomena are different from what
students encounter in their native language. Often they find
themselves at a loss, many of them find learning grammar is boring.
On the one hand, it is possible to communicate in the language
without knowing grammar in full, making grammatical mistakes. But
on the other hand, students have to write tests and take language
exams. Without knowing grammar, they may not pass this test. That
means you have to learn grammar! To make this process more fun and
effective, I use a variety of materials and exercises in my work,
some of which I want to share with you.
Today I want to talk about the
techniques and materials that I use when studying the topic
"Conditional Sentences". I think that you will agree that this is
one of the most difficult topics, along with the Times and Indirect
speech, and in order for students to freely use the three types of
conditional sentences in speech, it takes a long and painstaking
work. So we first start with a
PRESENTATION
Sometimes I use English songs,
listening to which I accompany with any specific
task.
Acquaintance with the first
type of conditional sentence can be started with the song "If I go
to Rome"
You can organize your work
with a song in different ways. This depends on the age of the
students and their level of English proficiency. Can you ask to
fill in the gaps in the lyrics, answer questions, complete
sentences with the structure If I (you) ...? I (you) will… You can
give the children cards with sentences from the song and ask them
to arrange them in the right order. The purpose of all these tasks
is to PRESENT the new structure, explain its meanings, and the form
of use.
Next comes STRUCTURE
PROCESSING.
At this stage, the teacher's
task is to provide as many exercises as possible to handle this
structure so that students feel confident in using the new
grammatical phenomenon. The teacher controls the students, corrects
mistakes, gives additional explanations,
prompts.
So, for example, the guys
enthusiastically work with proposals, having received tasks to
complete them:
If I go to the USA this
summer, I will visit ...
If I feel hungry this evening?
I will eat ...
If I have time next weekend, I
will go ...
If I have to write a story for
home work? I will write about ...
If you come to my home? You
will see ...
Further the task becomes more
complicated:
I'll visit my grandparents if
...
We will be very happy if
...
I will be angry with my friend
if ...
Will you help me
if…
My teacher will give me an
Exc. Mark if ...
Another very interesting
material on which you can work out conditional sentences of the
first type is signs: combine both parts into a single
whole:
If you walk under a ladder,
you will have bad lack.
More advanced students can be
asked to complete the sentence If you see a spider
...
Thus, this grammatical
structure is fixed on interesting material taken from life. This
allows you to use the first type of conditional sentences in
unprepared speech.
A very interesting game is
practicing type I conditional sentences ’’My birthday present’’ in
speech. But for this you need to repeat phrases describing
feelings, people's attitude to receiving a
gift:
To be
happy
To be
pleased
To be thankful to smb. for
smth.
To be
delighted
To be
impressed
To be
surprised
What are your feelings about
these present. All present are in my hand. Don’t use the word
"because". Use:
You
see
The fact
is
As you
know
As you
see
For example: If my friend
gives me a teddy bear, as a present, I will be happy. You see I
like toys.
The processing of conditional
sentences of the second and third it is carried out in a similar
way.
Exercise Next: If they asked
me to cut hair.
The task contained in it
allows not only to train students in the use of one or another
grammatical structure. But also to develop the creative abilities
of schoolchildren. Based on the text (model) built on a specific
grammatical material, the children are invited to create their own
text.
MODEL
TEXT.
I read this text twice.
Students listen carefully, the first time without taking any notes.
Then a second time they make small notes, and they are invited to
independently recreate this text in writing. After that, in small
groups, the students compare their versions and draw up the final
version, which is read to the whole class.
The next step is to create
your own text based on the support text, during this exercise you
can talk about whether pupils have similar problems and how they
solve them.
SKELETON
TEXT.
Next exercise "CHAINS OF
EVENTS"
A teacher or student offers
any type of conditional sentence. Then, along the chain, the
students name the result to which the action described in the
previous sentence leads:
If I go to London, I will
visit the Tower.
It seems to me successful to
work out conditional sentences of the third type on the material of
famous fairy tales, For example,
"CINDERELLA"
The next game is called "LOOKI
NG BACK"
I ask schoolchildren to
remember the events that happened or did not happen due to some
events a year ago, yesterday, during the holidays. Please write
down the sentences: THIHGS I REGRED and THINGS I AM GLAD
ABOUT.
For example, If hadn’t been so
rude to my mother she would have allowed me go
swimming.
And in conclusion, I would
like to cite a poem that can also be used in the
lessons:
If there is right in the
soul,
There is beauty in the
person.
If there is beauty in the
person,
There will be harmony in the
home.
If there will be harmony in
the home,
There will be order in the
nation.
If there will be order in the
nation,
There will be peace in the
world!
With such a wonderful poem, I
wish a peace on the planet, peace in the nation, harmony in the
family, I want to finish my master class
!!!
