Suffix -er We add the suffix -er to the word to compare two things. In the example, we compare the first giraffe with the second one. So, we use the suffix -er with tall and the word becomes taller. We also use than after the word taller to show a comparison. Suffix -est We add the suffix -est to a word when we need to pick out the best of all. Let us go back to the pictures again. There are three giraffes. We need to find the best of all with respect to height. The third giraffe is the best. We use the suffix -est to tall to make it tallest. We now say that the third giraffe is the tallest of all.
