Planned activities (replace the notes below with your planned activities)

Resources

Begining

5 min

Organizational moment

Teacher greets learners and introduces the lesson objectives

Warm up:

Show learners pictures and elicit the topic of the lesson. Ask learners to work in groups and list items which are made of plastic. Also elicit facts about plastic and plastic pollution which they know.

To consolidate new vocabulary

Allow Ss time to look up the meanings of the words in the list in their dictionaries. Elicit definitions from Ss around the class. Then give Ss time to use them to complete the sentences. Check Ss’ answers.

Middle

30 min

Reading

Show learners the title of the article “Marathon swimmer crosses the Pacific to fight plastic pollution” and ask them to predict what the article is about. Write down their ideas on the board.

They read the article for the first time and compare their predictions. They should also identify the major problem discussed in the article (plastic pollution of the oceans). Learners read the article again and pay attention on the words in bold. They should deduce the meaning of these words from the context. You can support them by giving them definitions or for some learners - translations. In this task you need to encourage learners to use context clues: read the entire paragraph, read the sentence, identify what part of speech the word is, focus on the sentence structure and try to guess the meaning of the words.

Formative assessment

Learners work individually and complete the reading tasks.

Differentiation: Less able learners read the article and answer multiple-choice questions. More able learners should write a short paragraph that explains the central idea of the article.

After reading, ask learners discuss the following questions:

Is plastic pollution a problem in our country?

How can we reduce the amount of plastic in Kazakhstan?

What can you personally do to help solve this problem?

To identify a narrative type

Read out the Study Skills box and explain the difference

between a first-person narrative and a third-person

narrative. Elicit what type of narrative the text is and

who narrates it.

To predict what happens next in a story, to give an

opinion

Ask Ss to discuss the questions in small groups.

Monitor the activity around the class and then elicit

answers from various groups.

To research a story Ask Ss to research the story

online. Play the video for Ss and elicit their comments.

Elicit who guessed correctly.

To research Atlantis and write a short article

Explain the task and give Ss time to research online and

find information about Atlantis. Tell Ss to make notes

under the headings. Then give Ss time to use their

notes to write a short article in the voice of a journalist.

Check Ss’ answers. Alternatively, assign the task as

HW and check Ss’ answers in the next lesson.

End

5 min

REFLECTION

At the end of the lesson, learners reflect on their learning:

Learners list 3 things they found out/learnt on the lesson.
