Among them, artificial intelligence (AI) holds a special place, opening up new opportunities for teaching, especially when working with students with special educational needs (SEN). The use of AI in English lessons makes the learning process more accessible, personalized, and engaging.

Characteristics of Teaching Students with SEN

Students with special educational needs require a specific approach to learning. They may experience difficulties with concentration, memory, reading, writing, and speech perception. Therefore, it is important to:

• adapt educational materials;

• use visual aids and repetition;

• provide support and positive motivation;

• consider each student’s individual learning pace.

This is where artificial intelligence technologies become an effective tool.

Opportunities of AI in English Language Teaching

1. Personalized Learning

AI allows teachers to tailor tasks to each student’s level. Platforms can automatically select exercises based on the learner’s progress, which is especially important for students with SEN.

2. Visualization and Interactivity

AI tools help create flashcards, images, and audio for words and sentences. This supports learning through multiple channels: visual and auditory.

3. Development of Speaking Skills

AI-based tools can pronounce words, check pronunciation, and help students practice speaking in a comfortable, stress-free environment.

4. Increased Motivation

Gamified elements, often built into AI platforms, make learning more engaging. This is particularly important for students who find it difficult to maintain attention for long periods.

AI helps teachers quickly create tasks, flashcards, tests, and adapted materials, saving time and improving lesson quality.

In English lessons with SEN students, the following AI-based activities can be used:

• listening to pronunciation of new words and sentences;

For example, when studying the topic “Colors,” students can see an image, hear the pronunciation, and repeat after the program. Tasks can be repeated multiple times, which helps improve retention.

Practice shows that the use of AI in English lessons with SEN students leads to positive results.

Some students demonstrate significant progress:

• one student has greatly improved reading skills and has developed a strong vocabulary;

• another student reads confidently and is actively trying to memorize more new words;

• a student who did not know the alphabet last year and struggled with memorization now knows the English alphabet, colors, and basic vocabulary thanks to regular repetition and interactive exercises.

This confirms that AI supports gradual and sustainable development of language skills.
