Anime as a Tool for Learning English: Research Results

Anime has become very popular among teenagers worldwide, and it is easy to see why. It is not only entertaining but can also help with language learning. In our research, we tested the idea that watching anime with English subtitles or dubbing can help teenagers remember more everyday words and phrases needed for real conversations.

We worked with two groups of 9th-grade students, 10 people in each group. The first group watched anime in English for 20-30 minutes every day for two weeks. The second group studied the same vocabulary only from textbooks. After two weeks, both groups took the same tests: matching words with their meanings and writing sentences using these words without any help.

The results were clear. The anime group scored 88% on the word recognition task and 82% on using words in sentences, while the textbook group scored 66% and 55%. The anime group also used more natural expressions and reacted more flexibly in conversation. Students felt more confident, motivated, and interested in using English after watching anime.

Anime gives repeated exposure to authentic spoken English, including slang and emotional language, which goes far beyond traditional school exercises. It also supports independent learning, since teens can continue watching anime outside of class without feeling like it is boring homework.

Overall, our hypothesis was fully supported: anime can help teenagers learn everyday English for real-life situations. It should be seen not just as entertainment but as a modern and effective educational tool.
