The Abay
State Academic Opera and Ballet
House
Kazakh State
Musical Theatre, now the Abay Academic Opera and Ballet House, was
inaugurated in 1934.
Essentially
it ushered to Kazakhstani arts hitherto unknown genres -opera and
choreographic ones. Painstaking efforts were made for the formation
of the theatre by its first manager Eugeny Brusilovsky, the very
one who created eight national operas and a ballet "Kyz-Zhibek",
"Yer-Targhyn", "Aiman-Sholpan", "Birzhan and Sara", "Kamar-sulu"
and others.
A veritable
landmark in the theatre's creative life has become staging of opera
"Abay" written by A.Zhubanov and L.Khamidi (libretto by
M.Auezov).
Performance
of leading parties in national operas has displayed to best
advantage brilliant vocal gift of legendary K.Baiseyitova,
Sh.Beisekova, A.Umbetbayev, B.Dosymzhanov, K.Kenzhetayev, the R.
and M.Abdullins.
Substantial
contribution to the formation of Kazakh ballet was made by Galina
Ulanova, Tamara Khanum and A.Seleznev, the one who created his
choreographic school here.
Along with
national ballet performances of "Cambar and Nazym", "By the Path of
Friendship", "Frescoes" the theatre's repertoire presents such
world masterpieces as "Swan Lake", "Raimonda", "Copper Horseman",
"Corsaire".
