The theme: My Kazakhstan

Aims: To talk about Kazakhstan culture in English.

Language focus: This is my country. This is my flag.

Target vocabulary: country, flag, capital city, president.

Cross-curricular links: Geography, Art (Ending the Lesson activity).

Extra materials: The Welcome to my Kazakhstan! poster, flashcards, boxes with models of sights, pictures of presidents, flags and maps, 4 balls, the interactive board, Smiles1 i-book, pieces of paper.

The plan of the lesson

Beginning the lesson 7min

• Organizing time. 1min

Good morning children! How are you? I’m fine, thank you! Let’s start our English lesson.

• Activity to revise the vocabulary from the previous lesson. RICH 4min

Game “Basketball”. Words: country, flag, capital city, president, city (4 balls).

• Poster (The Welcome to my Kazakhstan! poster). 2min

Put up the poster on the board. Point to it and ask: What country is this? Elicit: Kazakhstan. Say: Yes, that’s right. Welcome to Kazakhstan! Ask pupils in L1 if it need: What is the capital city of Kazakhstan? Which cities do you know? Who is the president of Kazakhstan?

Presentation and practice 25min

• Activities to present and activate the new language (Flashcards – river, mountain, lake, forest, park). 5min

Put up the flashcards, one at a time, on the board and say corresponding words. The pupils repeat, chorally and/or individually. Then point to each flashcard in random order. Ask individual pupils to name them. Ask the rest of the class for verification.

The pupils match the audio with the pictures.

• Complete the sentences. 5min

• An activity to practise Kazakhstan culture in English (Smiles1 i-book). 5min

Play the CD. The pupils listen and point to the pictures. play the CD again pausing after each sentence. The pupils repeat chorally and/or individually.

Allow the groups to choose one box. There are some models of sights, pictures of Presidents, Flags and Maps. Groups choose necessary things, which refers to Kazakhstan, describe and say about them.

Ending the lesson 13min

• An activity to consolidate the language of the lesson

Ask the pupils to think of images that come mind when they think of Kazakhstan and draw them (a piece of paper). 5min

• Allow the pupils to present their pictures and display their work somewhere in the class. 7min

• Children, did you like the lesson? Clap your hands for each other! Thank you! The lesson is over, good bye! 1min
