• Marie, what is your favourite sport?

• Football

• Football? Do you mean soccer or American football?

What is your favourite sport?

• I like both. But I like American football better.

Performance activity.

Reading for gist: Sports Day.

The learners read the text about Sports Day in the UK and fill in the worksheet.

1. Characters: The students of British schools.

2. Setting: It always happens in summer and everyone takes part.

3. Problem: You’re lucky if you reach the finish line without falling over!

4. Events.

Beginning: You can win points for your house all year round with good work and good behavior, but you can also win points on Sports Day.

Middle: The sack race is like a running race – except the athletes have got their legs inside sacks and they have to jump towards the finish line! The egg and spoon race is also like a running race – but everybody has to carry a spoon and balance an egg on it. If you drop your egg, you lose the race! Everyone’s favourite competition is the three – legged race. Two students are in each team. They stand next to each other and tie two of their legs together. Then, they have to run!

End: As the British say, “It’s not the winning, it’s the taking part.”

5. Solution: It’s great to win a medal on Sports Day, but the real reason everyone loves this day is that it’s so much fun to play sports with all your friends.

The Game “Toss the ball!”

Play the game in two groups. One pupil from each group thinks of a sport, but doesn’t tell his / her classmates what it is. He / she throws the ball to one of his / her classmates in the other group. This pupil asks a question to guess the sport and throws the ball back, when he / she gets the answer. Then the first pupil throws the ball to another classmate for another question and so on. You can ask up to 5 questions to guess the sport. Your team gets one point for a correct guess. The first team to get 5 points is the winner.
