History of Almaty Technological University

Almaty Technological University (ATU) is one of the leading higher education institutions in Kazakhstan specializing in training professionals for the food industry, light industry, service sector, and business. The university has played a significant role in the industrial and technological development of the country. Its history is closely connected with the growth of Kazakhstan’s economy and the modernization of its education system.

The history of Almaty Technological University dates back to 1957. During this period, Kazakhstan experienced rapid development in the food and light industries, which created a strong demand for qualified engineers and technologists.In response to this need, the institution was initially established as a branch of the Zhambyl Technological Institute of Light and Food Industry. At that time, its main goal was to train specialists for the rapidly growing industrial sector.In 1966, the branch became an independent institution and was renamed the Almaty Technological Institute of Light and Food Industry. This marked an important milestone in its development. The institute began expanding its facilities, opening new departments, laboratories, and academic programs, while also increasing student enrollment.

After Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, major reforms were introduced in the education system. The transition to a market economy and integration into the global educational space required modernization.

In 1996, the institute was granted university status and officially became Almaty Technological University. This marked the beginning of a new stage in its history.

Key changes during this period included:

• introduction of new educational standards

• development of international cooperation

• modernization of academic programs

• implementation of a multi-level education system (bachelor’s, master’s, PhD)
