Compare and Contrast

Comparing means pointing out the similarities between two or more things.

For instance:

Both roses and lilies are flowers.

Both look beautiful.

Contrasting means pointing out the differences between two or more things.

For instance:

The rose is pink; the lily is white.

The rose smells sweet; the lily has an odd smell.

You can compare and contrast birds, animals, people, schools, cars, clothes, etc.

You can compare and contract anything under the sun.

You can compare and contrast topics, characters, and problems in a story.

Compare & Contrast Titles

Look at the titles of these books:

Both the titles talk about dogs.

The following are the differences between the two.

The title Bad Dog, Marley! tells us that the book is about one dog, Marley. The other book's title, Top 10 Dog Breeds, suggests that it is focuses on ten breeds instead of one dog.

The title Bad Dog, Marley! sounds like a story. Top 10 Dog Breeds sounds more like a book imparting factual information.

David was a big, black dog. He lived on a farm in lowa. He was happy until Perry entered the house. Perry was a cute puppy. He ate David's food and slept in David's bed. The lady in the house liked Perry very much. She carried Perry wherever she went. This made David angry.
