The pupil quietly says the word to the pupil next to them and so on, until all the pupils have heard the country. The last pupil has to come to the board and say and write the country. |

Match. Say. Use: a, an. To present and practice articles (a, an). Books closed. Say, as you write on the board: Great Britain is an island. Scotland is a country. Underline the words in bold. Elicit/Explain that the underlined words are indefinite articles and that a/an have got a similar meaning to ‘one’. Elicit/Explain that a is used before countable nouns beginning with a consonant sound, and an before countable nouns beginning with a vowel sound. Books open. Go through the Grammar box briefly. The pupils then read and match the sentence halves to make sentences. |
The Irtysh is a river in Kazakhstan. 3 Kespe is a traditional food in Kazakhstan. 4 The dombra is a string instrument. 5 Astana is a city in Kazakhstan.

Explain that we use the definite article (the) to talk about specific things, the names of rivers (e.g. the Seine), seas/oceans (e.g. the Atlantic Ocean), musical instruments (e.g. the violin), etc. Point out that we do not use the to talk about things in general, for proper nouns (e.g. Kairat), sports (e.g. basketball), lakes (e.g. Lake Titikaka), etc. Read the instructions and explain the activity. The pupils complete the gaps with the correct article where necessary. Check their answers. |
