Warm-up (3–4 minutes)

• Books closed. Ask a student How old are you? and elicit I’m (student’s age) from the student. Remind students that they learned this phrase in exercise 6 on page 7. Write it on the board if you think it is necessary. • Students ask each other the question in a chain going around the classroom. Correct pronunciation where necessary.

Middle

Exercise 1

• Students open their books. Draw their attention to the photo on the top right and ask them what the student is doing. Elicit any suggestions and explain the task. • Play the recording, pausing after each number. Students point to the correct number on the page. Ask them to repeat the number before moving on to the next one. • Write the words for the numbers 1–20 on the board.

Practise them with the class. .

Exercise 2

• Focus students on the first photo and discuss the boy’s age with the class. Ask: How old is he? and elicit I think he’s (student’s opinion). Write this on the board in a weaker class. • Divide students into pairs. They complete the activity. Monitor and circulate, helping where necessary. • Play the recording to check answers. Get some feedback from the class – are they surprised by any of the answers?

• Ask students to swap exercise book with a partner so that each student has a new grid in front of them. Explain how the game works:

1. You are going to read out numbers between one and twenty at random.

2. If a student hears a number on their bingo card, they cross out that number.

The first student to cross out all of the numbers on their card and to shout Bingo! is the winner.
