Preposition

A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun.

It shows the relationship of the noun or pronoun with the other words in a sentence.

The ball is _______ the box.

Where is the ball?

The ball is in the box.

The word "in" is the preposition which shows the relationship between the ball and the box. Without the preposition "in," the location of the ball cannot be identified, and the relationship between the ball and the box is unclear.

Here are a few more sentences which indicate the location of the ball and the relationship between the ball and the box.

The ball is behind the box.

The ball is above the box.

The ball is beside the box.

In the sentences above, a preposition shows the relationship between the ball and the box and the exact location of the ball.

What are the most common prepositions?

Some of the most common prepositions are:

about, above, across, after, against, along, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, but, by, despite, down, during, except, for, from, in, inside, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto, out, outside, over, past, since, through, throughout, till, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon, with, within, without.

What are the different types of prepositions?

Some of the different types of prepositions are:

1. Preposition of place

2. Preposition of time

3. Preposition of direction

4. Preposition of manner

5. Preposition of cause

Here are a few examples for each type of preposition.

There is a cow in the meadow.

In this example, the word "in" is the preposition which specifies a place.

Where is the cow?

The cow is in the meadow.

Edwin reached his house at noon.

In this example, "at" is the preposition which specifies a time.

When did he reach his house?

He reached at noon.

The cat is under the table.

In this example, "under" is the preposition which specifies a direction.

Where is the cat?

The cat is under the table.

She goes to school by bus.

In this example, "by" is the preposition which specifies a manner.

How does she go to school?

She goes to school by bus.

Alena was rewarded for her hard work.

In this example, "for" is the preposition which specifies a cause.

Why was Alena rewarded?

She was rewarded for her hard work.
