1.Warm-up.

Ask learners to watch a video about the heroes of Kazakhstani. Ask them why it is important to remember them? And ask them what further information they know about the following heroes:

-Aliya Moldagulova

-Talgat Bigeldinov

-Manshuk Mametov

-Sultan Baimagambetov

-Khiuaz Dospanova

Explain learners the importance of remembering such heroes and how much they are important in our lives.

2.Focus on listening

Look at the photos with learners and in open class ask them where they think the photos were taken. Listen to some of their ideas but do not comment at this stage.

Learners listen to the text to check their ideas. You may like to pre-teach some of the following difficult words: statues, independence, human rights, messages, car accident, handprints, footprints, autographs, concrete. (See English in Mind 1 p.30 Culture in mind Remembering Heroes or Handout 1)

3) Which country has a special remembrance day? (USA for Dr Martin Luther King, the human rights leader )

4) Why did people in Paris leave flowers in the car accident place? (because Lady Diana Spencer had a car accident)

5) Where do celebrities have their handprints, footprints and autographs? (in concrete at Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre)
