Tulips through
time
People often think that tulips
come from the Netherlands because they grow many beautiful
varieties of tulip there and sell them all around the world.
However, many types of tulip actually come from Kazakhstan, where
you can still find 36 different types of tulips growing in the wild
today
Tulips were brought to the
Netherlands in the 17th century, probably from Central Asia. There,
people created tulips with interesting patterns and colours using
tulips such as the Greig and Kauffman tulips, which grow in
Kazakhstan. These new types of tulip became almost like a currency
in Holland as people started buying rare tulips for very high
prices, hoping to sell them later for even more money. This was
known as ‘tulip mania’ because people were crazy about the flowers.
Even though this didn’t last for long and many people lost all
their money, tulips are still a very popular flower in the
Netherlands.
In Kazakhstan, tulips have
always been very important. The flowers come out in the spring
around the time of the Nauryz festival, which celebrates new life
and the arrival of spring. Since tulips only last for a couple of
weeks, people say that these flowers remind us of how short life
is.
Many of the tulips growing in
the wild in Kazakhstan can be found in the Karatau mountains,
particularly in Red Hill. However, unfortunately people often pick
these flowers to use them as decoration and of the 36 types of
tulips growing in Kazakhstan today, around half of them are in the
Red Book, which lists all the types of rare plants and flowers that
need to be protected.

Leo -Good
afternoon, and welcome to Arts Spectrum. Today I’m at the Warehouse
Art Gallery for the opening of a new photography exhibition. I’m
talking to one of the organisers, Tamsin West, who’s going to tell
us more about the photographers and their work. So, Tamsin, what
kind of photos are included in the exhibition?
Tamsin -Well, the photos
that are exhibited in our gallery today are all about nature. We’ve
got amusing pictures of animals, beautiful images of rare plants
and colourful landscapes ... Some of the photos are more
traditional, others are provocative and controversial.
Leo - Were all the photos
taken by professional photographers?
Tamsin - Yes, they were
taken by professional photographers from more than 50 different
countries. The photo right behind you, for example, was taken in
Malta, but the photographer is from Germany.
Leo -The picture that
shows a sunset over the sea?
Tamsin -Yes, the Sunrise,
Sunset photo.
Leo - That’s a strange
title. Is the photo named after a song?
Tamsin -Yes, there is a
song with the same name by Perry Como, an American singer. The
stone arch you can see in the photo was called the Azure Window.
Unfortunately, it was destroyed by a storm in 2017.
Leo -What about the photo
of a dandelion over there? The title is Who Has Seen the Wind?.
This sounds like a line from a poem.
Tamsin -That’s because it
is from a poem. Who Has Seen the Wind? was written by the famous
English poet Christina Rossetti in the 19th century.
Leo -Oh, I see. This one
has got an interesting title, too – Game Over. It shows a dead
honeybee in a spider’s web.
Tamsin -Some visitors
complain that this photo is shocking, but I think it has a very
strong message.
Leo - I agree. Tamsin, we
only have time for one more photo.
Tamsin -OK, then I’m going
to show you my favourite image. It’s called Underwater
Forest.
Leo -This is beautiful
indeed. It looks like the trees are growing in the water! What kind
of trees are they? And where was the photo taken?
Tamsin - It shows Lake
Kaindy in Kazakhstan. These are birch trees. The lake was created
in 1911 as a result of an earthquake. Before that, this was a
valley.
Leo - Amazing! Thank you,
Tamsin, for ...
