My day

I am a trainee teacher on the School Direct programme in Manchester. I started the programme in September. I was thrown straight in at the deep end and employed full-time by a primary school, where spend four days out of five as a member of the staff team and a year 5 teacher .

I am training to be a teacher in a primary school and this is a day in my life as a teacher in training.

5.30 am.

My day begins early. There is not much time for anything in the morning. I get up, have my shower, eat my breakfast, get dressed and I am ready to go.

I have a 50 –minute commute from my house outside Manchester to my school. I usually drive. This journey in my car gives me time to think , grow energy, reflect process and at times have a mini meltdown and a sing. I worked hard all weekend preparing for my professional review, which is less than a week away. This consists of an observation, a review and gathering four pieces of evidence for each teaching standard and substandard. I should also add the marking, lesson planning, reading, reflective and academic writings.

6.30am

I arrive at school. School is quiet at this time of the morning. My time before the children arrive is usually spent preparing for lessons, gathering resources, last-minute planning and lesson evaluations from the day before. This particular morning it is continuing to work on the teaching standard evidence for my professional review.

8.45 am

The children arrive. I love greeting the children in the morning, which is my favourite time of day. Today , we have a visitor. A local writer and story-teller is coming to present this new book. Children are excited. They want to see a real writer.

9.00 am

The visitor arrives and I introduce him to my class. Children greet the visitor. They are intrigued and engaged. They ask a lot of questions and show the visitor their own writing.

10.30 am.

It is break time after a morning of numeracy and phonics. I have time to catch breath.

10.45 am.

It is literacy lesson and I am being observed by my subject mentor and my professional mentor. We are doing poetry, and the children are keen to get on their feet and perform some of their work. Being observed will never be easy but I am rather used to it by now. I tend to just get into the flow of teaching and do my best for me and, more importantly , for the children.

12.00pm.

After the observation I go for feedback from both mentors. Which is always productive and constractive. Today is a working lunch.

2.00 pm.

This is my last class of the day. My students work on an essay. Writing is not easy. It is important not only to write down anything that comes to one s head. Structure is important. Each piece of writing has a central theme. The students learn how to divide the text into paragraph . the essay needs an introduction and proper conclusion. It is hard work not only for my pupils but for me as well.

3.10 pm.

The school is over. Children go home but I stay at school. My day ends with evaluating my lessons, planning for the next day, checking emails, creating and collecting resources, marking and then the commute home while reflecting on the day or being absorbed by music.

7.00 pm.

In the evening if am not working , I will go to the gym, perhaps see a friend and catch up with my family or friends. Sometimes I have a power nap or go to a concert.

9.00 pm.

This time to go to bed. I have to get up early in the morning and need my sleep.
