Speaking

Show a 60-second clip of the ISS or a SpaceX launch (no sound). Students predict: 'What challenges did humans face to make this happen?'

Pair work

Quick 2-minute discussion: 'If you could travel to space, would you? What would stop you?' Encourage students to give reasons.

Vocabulary

Elicit 5–8 words students already know about space. Write on the board — you will add to this list throughout the lesson.

Phase 2 | 15 minutes

Reading

Students skim a short adapted text (200–250 words) about the history of space exploration — from the Moon landing to current Mars ambitions.

Task

Identify the writer's stance: is the tone optimistic, cautious, or neutral? Underline 3 phrases that support their answer.

Model how to spot writer's opinion in a passage. Discuss hedging language: 'it could be argued…', 'there is evidence to suggest…', 'arguably…'

Phase 3 | 15 minutes

Input

Introduce 10 target words via example sentences projected on the board. Students categorise each word: noun / verb / adjective.

Activity

Sentence transformation: rewrite 5 sentences using a given target word without changing the meaning. Share in pairs.

Collocations

Collocations focus: 'propulsion system', 'gravitational pull', 'sustainable orbit' — students identify which two words pair naturally.

Phase 4 | 20 minutes

Setup

Divide class into two groups. Motion: 'Space exploration should be privately funded, not government-led.' Assign sides randomly.

Prep (5 min)

Groups brainstorm arguments. Encourage evidence: cost, innovation, competition, democratic accountability, risk management.

Debate (12 min)

Structured format: opening statement (2 min each), rebuttals (90 sec each), floor questions (3 min).

Display a full IELTS Task 2 prompt about space budgets. Students identify key instruction words: 'to what extent', 'discuss', 'consider'.

Together, write a model introduction: paraphrase the question, state position, outline paragraph structure.

Individual

Students draft one body paragraph independently (8 min), applying a concrete example or argument from the debate.

Peer review

Swap papers — check for: topic sentence, supporting evidence, academic register, linking words. Give one written comment.

Phase 6 | 10 minutes

Exit ticket

Students write one sentence: 'The most compelling argument I heard today was… because…'
