The writing process consists of 5 steps:

Prewriting

Drafting

Revising

Editing and proofreading

Publishing

Drafting

In the writing stage, we choose only the relevant information from the previous step. In this part of the process, we must concentrate on writing without worrying about style, spelling, or grammatical errors. At the end, we must make sure we have enough content for the following stage.

Revising

It means checking your writing to see how it can be improved. Your teacher or your classmate can read the work out loud to see how the ideas flow.

Editing and Proofreading

It means correcting all those things that need to be fixed such as spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, sentence structure, subject/verb agreement, verb tenses, or word usage.

Publishing

This is the last step in which you prepare a final copy of the work for submission.

Topic, Main Idea, Topic Sentence

Almost every piece of writing that is made up of a number of sentences should be organized in paragraphs. A paragraph can be defined as a sequence of organized sentences that are all connected to a specific topic.

The topic is the person, place, object, or event under discussion. It answers the question "Who or what is the paragraph about?"

A well-written paragraph must have a controlling idea that is developed throughout the paragraph. That idea is usually articulated in the form of a sentence, which is called the topic sentence. The topic sentence is a general sentence that sums up the main idea. When you are asked about the topic sentence, you are being asked to find the statement that expresses the main idea in the author's words. People can come up with many different ideas for the same paragraph, but only the author of the passage can create the topic sentence.

Lesson Review

The first stage of writing where ideas are gathered is prewriting.

The second stage of writing where ideas are put into the sentences without worrying about style or grammar is drafting.

Revision is the third stage of the writing process, when the author makes changes to the first draft.

Editing and proofreading is checking and correcting the grammar, spelling, and other errors in the draft.

In the publishing stage, the author prepares a final copy of their work and shares it with their audience.

The idea that is usually articulated in the form of a sentence is the topic sentence.
