There are millions of different materials.
But we can put them all into a small
number of groups by looking at their
properties.
One way of classifying materials is to say
whether something is a solid, a liquid or
a gas. These are called the three states
of matter.

Liquids change shape,
gases fill space, solids
stay the same
Liquids change shape to fit what
they are in. Lumps of solid keep the
same shape. A gas will spread out
to fill any space.

Some things are solid, some things are
liquid and some things are gas. Solids,
liquids and gases have different
properties.
For example, gases and liquids will
flow.
Solids do not flow.

Solids
Solids stay the same shape.
Unless it gets hotter or colder, a
solid also stays the same size. It
takes up the same amount of
space. We say that its volume
stays the same.
The diamonds in the photograph
have been part of the Crown
Jewels for about 100 years. The
hooks are fixed on to hold the
diamonds in place. Explain why
they are as easy to put in place
now as they were when they were
first made.

Liquids
You can pour a liquid from one
container to another. So liquids do
not have a shape of their own. They
fill up the container from the bottom
and take on its shape.
But liquids do stay the same volume
unless they get hotter or colder.
a) Describe how the shape of the
liquid changes when it is poured into
the different containers shown in the
drawing. Use the words 'ball-shaped',
'tube-shaped', and 'cubic'.
b) What happens to the volume of the
liquid as it is poured into the different
containers?

Gases
Like a liquid, a gas does
not have its own shape.
But a gas is different from
a liquid because it spreads
out into all the space in
the container.
Look at the diagrams. How
do we know that the
brown gas spreads out to
fill all the space when the
tap is opened?

Some substances are
heavier than others
The table shows how heavy different
substances are. To make the table fair, the
figures are for one cubic centimetre of
each substance. One cubic centimetre is
about the size of a small dice.
Solids and liquids are heavier than gases.
We say that solids and liquids are denser
than gases.

solids will float on water?
Copy the diagram of oil and water.
