The snow leopard (Panthera uncia), also known as the ounce, is a
large cat native to the mountainous regions of Central and South
Asia. It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because the
world's population is estimated at less than 10,000 adults and is
expected to decline by about 10% by 2040. It is threatened by
poaching and habitat destruction by the following infrastructure
developers. [1] Inhabits alpine and subalpine areas at altitudes of
3,000 to 4,500 m (9,800 to 14,800 ft), ranging from eastern
Afghanistan, the Himalayas and the Tibetan Highlands, southern
Siberia, Mongolia and western China. In the countries of the
northern part of the range, it also lives at lower altitudes.

Characteristic
The fur of the snow leopard is whitish to gray with black spots on
the head and neck, but larger rosettes on the back, sides and
bushy tail. The belly is whitish. His eyes are pale green or gray.
He has a short muzzle and a prominent forehead. Its nasal cavity
is large. The fur is dense, with hairs 5 to 12 cm (2.0 to 4.7 in) in
length. Its body is stocky, with short legs and slightly smaller
than that of other cats of the Panthera genus, reaching a
shoulder height of 56 cm (22 inches), and head and body sizes

Hunting and food
The snow leopard is a carnivore and actively hunts its prey. It is
an adapted hunter and also eats carrion. Its preferred wild prey
species are the Himalayan blue sheep, Himalayan tar, argali,
goat (Capra falconeri) and wild goat. He also hunts livestock. [47]
It prefers prey weighing between 36 and 76 kg (79 to 168 lbs),
but also preys on smaller mammals such as marmots, pikas and
voles. The diet of the snow leopard varies depending on its range
and time of year, as well as the availability of prey. In the
Himalayas, he hunts mainly Himalayan sheep and Siberian ibex.

Conservation of leopards
Numerous agencies are working to conserve the snow leopard
and its threatened mountain ecosystems. These include the
Snow Leopard Trust, Snow Leopard Conservancy, Snow Leopard
Network, Cat Specialist Group, TRAFFIC, and Panthera
Corporation.
These groups and governments from various countries,
representing the snow leopard range, non-profit organizations
and donors from around the world, worked together at the 10th
Snow Leopard Conference in Beijing. Consumers and needs of
the population in contact with the habitats of the snow leopard,
their research, public programs in the programs of the snow
leopard regions.
