of the states come from the names of Indian tribes and
the names of the kings of England and France.
States are divided into counties (English county, parish
(Louisiana), borough (Alaska)) — smaller administrative
units (smaller than the state, but not smaller than the
city), with the exception of five counties (boroughs)
within the city of New York. In total, according to the
U.S. Census Bureau, there are 3141 counties in the
country. The smallest number of counties is in Delaware
(3), the largest is in Texas (254).
