The golden age of Central Asian exploration was presided over by
Nikolai Mikhailovich Przewalski, Russia's premier 19th-century
explorer. Born in Smolensk on 12 April 1839, his passion from an
early age was travel. Inspired by his boyhood hero David
Livingstone, his dream was to explore the undiscovered wildernesses
of the world. As he struck east across Siberia, through Central Asia,
Mongolia and China, his sights began to focus on Lhasa, the hidden
and much coveted capital of Tibet. En route he left his mark on
Kyrgyzstan.
Part Cossack, part Polish nobility, Nikolai enjoyed a wild, free childhood in
the woods of the family estate near Smolensk. His father was an army
officer and young Nikolai, under heavy pressure to be one too, apparently
decided that an army career would give him the best chance to hit the road,
although he never enjoyed the military life. He studied both in Smolensk
and at the military academy in St Petersburg before spending a period as a
geography teacher at the Warsaw Military School in 1864.
