Basketball
Although he created the game of basketball at the YMCA in
Springfield, Massachusetts, Dr. James A. Naismith was a Canadian.
Working as a physical education instructor at the International
YMCA, now Springfield College, Dr. Naismith noticed a lack of
interest in exercise among students during the wintertime. The New
England winters were fierce, and the students balked at participating
in outdoor activities. Naismith determined that a fast-moving game
that could be played indoors would fill a void after the baseball and
football seasons had ended.
First he attempted to adapt outdoor games such as soccer and
rugby to indoor play, but he soon found them unsuitable for confined
areas. Finally, he determined that he would have to invent a game.
In December of 1891, Dr. Naismith hung two old peach baskets
at either end of the gymnasium at the school, and, using a soccer ball
and nine players on each side, organized the first basketball game.
The early rules allowed three points for each basket and made
running with the ball a violation. Every time a goal was made,
someone had to climb a ladder to retrieve the ball.
Nevertheless, the game became popular. In less than a year,
basketball was being played in both the United States and Canada.
Five years later, a championship tournament was staged in New York
City, which was won by the Brooklyn Central YMCA.
The teams had already been reduced to seven players, and five
became standard in the 1897 season. When basketball was introduced
as a demonstration sport in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, it
quickly spread throughout the world. In 1906, a metal hoop was used
for the first time to replace the basket, but the name basketball has
remained.

OLDIES BUT GOODIES
A) RAMAYANA (5TH–4TH CENTURIES BCE), VALMIKI
One of the great works of Indian literature and rivaling even the Mahabharata, the Ramayana (meaning
“Rama’s journey”) is a Sanskrit epic of 24,000 couplets in seven books. Its moral purpose is the presentation
of ideal role models— for a king, brother, wife, servant, and so on—within a narrative framework. The story
describes the actions of the god Rama, with the help of the monkey general Hanuman, against a demon king
who has abducted his wife, Sita. The Hindu sage and poet Valmiki, the reputed author, makes an appearance
in the work.
B) THE PILLOW BOOK (c.1000), SEI SHO NAGON
In the Japanese tradition, a pillow book was a collection of personal musings supposedly written in the
bedroom. The best-known example is that of Sei Sho nagon, a lady of the Heian-kyo court. The entries, which
were arranged thematically rather than in chronological order by scribes for circulation among the Japanese
court, offer observations on people and nature, ranging from caustic wit to appreciation of the finer things in
life. The reader gains glimpses into the minutiae of court life, such as flutes, disobedient dogs, and ladies
betting on how long it would take a mound of snow to melt.
C) MABINOGION (11TH–14TH CENTURIES)
The earliest example of prose literature in Britain, Mabinogion is a collection of 11 anonymous Welsh prose
tales, some of which reveal Celtic and French influences. Its two source manuscripts date from the late 14th
century. There are elements of supernatural fantasy, probably deriving from an ancient oral storytelling
tradition. Diverse in form and content, some of the tales feature the legendary king Arthur. The most
sophisticated stories are the “Four Branches,” which include giants, magical white horses, and incest, betrayal,
and redemption.
D) NIBELUNGENLIED (c.1200)
The main characters of this work have become internationally known through Wagner’s Ring cycle of operas.
The Nibelungenlied, or “Song of the Nibelungs,” is a richly imagined anonymous epic poem in Middle High
German. Medieval German literature had turned to courtly refinement, but the Nibelungenlied looked back to
older, more visceral notions of honor and vengeance. It tells of stolen treasure (Rhine gold) and magic powers
(including invisibility); of the dragon-slayer Siegfried and his wooing of the princess Kriemhild; and of
Kriemhild’s revenge against the Nibelungen after the murder of Siegfried by one of their most prominent

warriors, the king’s brother Hagen. Some characters— including the powerful queen Brunhild—and some of
the narrative are rooted in Old Norse poems.
E) THE GOLDEN DONKEY (2ND CENTURY CE), APULEIUS
Written by Apuleius (c.124–c.170 CE), a Numidian Berber who benefited from the opportunities offered by
Roman rule, The Golden Donkey is the only work of fiction in Latin to have survived in its entirety. It tells of
the adventures of a young man whose fascination with magic results in his transformation into a donkey. In
this new guise, he passes from owner to owner until the goddess Isis breaks the spell and frees him. The tale’s
principal ingredients include satire, slapstick, bawdiness, allegory, moral reflection, and, above all, humor.
The idea of the transformation of humans into animals has remained a major theme in world literature.
F) ODYSSEY (c.725–675 BCE), HOMER
An epic ancient Greek poem in 24 books (more than 12,000 lines), composed for oral performance, the
Odyssey is traditionally attributed to Homer. The poem is in part a sequel to Homer’s other great work, the
Iliad. Its hero is Odysseus, king of Ithaca, who is described wandering the seas, homeward bound after the
end of the 10-year Trojan War. He has vivid adventures, which include encounters with supernatural creatures
and temptations of the flesh. Both his son Telemachus and wife Penelope despair for Odysseus’s return—he
has been absent for two decades. Penelope has to deal with a series of suitors, whose fate at the hands of the
disguised Odysseus forms the dramatic denouement of the tale.
