Aim

To teach students to talk about factual situations by using zero and the first

conditional and talk about hypothetical/imaginary situations by using

the second conditional in the context of standards WorldSkills.

Objectives of the lesson:

1. Differentiate between a fact (zero/1^st conditional) and a hypothetical/imaginary situation (2^nd conditional)

2. To form students` abilities in oral speech, listening, reading and understanding English. 

3. To bring up the feeling of love, care, forgiveness, mercy

Problems

1. The students may have difficulty grasping the difference between the first conditional and second conditional.

2. They may not understand the difference between fact and hypothetical.

Warm Up Stage

1. Organizational moment

Teacher greets the students (Good afternoon, students. Nice to meet you.) and starts a general conversation asking the students: I guess, you all know the 5T ереже. Let’s remember:

• I invite you to the world of “a minute of silence”. Sit comfortably. Put your hands on your knees and relax. Now close your eyes and enjoy pure music. (Pause). Breathe in. Breathe out. (Pause). The birds are singing. You have no troubles. No serious problems. (Pause). You are quiet. Your brain relaxes. There is calm in your body. Nothing diverts your attention. You are relaxing.(Pause).

You love your parents, your college, your friends. They love you too. Learn to appreciate every good thing. You can do everything. Open your eyes.

3. Dividing the students into groups with the help of colours: yellow, red, green.

• You will be given images and you should define the property shown in the pictures. This property will be your group’s name.

1. Bridge-in. Method “Sweets to speak” (“Sweets to speak” is a new communicative technique, the use of which allows you to create a situation for active communication).

• What did you do yesterday?

• Are you normally busy?

• If you had more free time, how would you spend it?

• Do you play the lottery?

• Have you ever won much money?

• How much money did you win?

• What would you do with a million dollars? I know a few guys who knows what they’ll do with a million dollars. They’ll tell you in this song that they made. Sing it with them!

Students listen to the song “If I had a million dollars” by Barenaked Ladies

• “What would the singer of the song buy or do if he had a million dollars” 

There are lots of examples in the video, including: a house, a car (K-Car), a tree-fort (with a fridge), a fur coat (not a real one), an exotic pet (llama or emu), John Merrick’s remains, crazy elephant bones, your love, expensive ketchups, art, and a monkey.

• As you see, today you will learn a new grammar structure called If sentences or Conditional sentences. We use it when we talk about real or unreal situations. By the end of the lesson you will be able to use the conditionals in your discussion and expressing opinions on different situations. Today our lesson will be held in the context of standards WorldSkills.

2. Inductive way of learning grammar. Method “Jigsaw reading”

(A jigsaw provides a way for students to learn new content and also provides an opportunity for them to teach each other what they have learned and discuss implications of the reading).

Cooperative Jigsaw group silently read the examples and discuss to create Conditional rules themselves. Each group will have a different types of Conditionals. Time 2-3 min.

1^st group: Zero conditional

• If I mix hydrogen with oxygen, it turns into water.

• Don’t use your phone if you are in the class.

2^nd group: First conditional

• If the weather’s good tomorrow, we’ll go to the park.

• We’ll catch a taxi if we miss the bus.

3^rd group: Second conditional

• If I were president, I would make the life in our country better.

• I ‘d travel around the world if I had a million dollars.

Anwering the questions:

• How many parts do conditional sentences have?

• What are the two parts of a conditional sentence?

• How many types of conditionals do you know?

• We know three types of conditionals: the zero conditional refers to general facts, the first conditional to true actions in the present, the second conditional for unreal situations in the present

Activity 1

Method “Find your pair” (This method helps to develop the speed of perception and comparison ).

If you heat water, it boils.

If there is no rain, we will go on a picnic.

If you see my friends, will you tell them to call me?

If I were rich, I would travel around the world

If you were sensible, you would put that money in the bank.

If you had paid attention in class, you would have known about the test.

If I had remembered to call my friend last night, she wouldn’t have sent me an angry text message.

Activity 2. Using conditionals in real life. Advertisements and conditional statements. Method “PRES” (This method develops literacy skills of students formulating their point of view)

• Do you enjoy the advertisements on TV? Why or why not?

• What is your favourite advertisement ?

Often times in advertising we find conditional statements. They are not

always stated in an “IF…” statement, but they do imply the same message.

• Group students together.

• Make our own product.

• Create your own conditional advertisement.

• Protect your project using the method “PRES”.

Activity 3. Making a poster

• As you know, Nazarbayev instructed the Ministry to develop and adopt a Law on the Status of Teachers in his state-of-the-nation-address. What would you do if you were the Minister of Education and Science?

After watching video the President’s state-of-the-nation-address students discuss and make the poster “If I were the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazahstan, ……”

Activity 5. Online game Kahoot. “Who is faster and smarter?” Here is given 10 questions. (3 min)

As we live in the world of technology. Why can’t we use Smartphone to make our lesson more interesting? Let’s do it now!
