Driving: on the LEFT OR on the RIGHT?
Although the UK and the US share several characteristics, such as their
language, they are also different in many ways. One of these is driving.
The main difference between the two countries is that, in the UK, people drive
on the left side of the road and the driver’s seat is on the right side of the car. About 35%
of the world’s population does the same, including other Anglophone countries such as
Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, as well as countries in Asia, Africa
and the Caribbean that used to be British colonies.
Although much of the world thinks that British people drive on the ‘wrong’ side of the
road, originally, the majority of people travelled on the left side of the road. In medieval
times, an often violent period of history, people used horses as a means of transport and
it made more sense for them to travel on the left side because that meant that their right
hand, the hand they used their sword with, would be on the side facing an opponent
travelling towards them. People started travelling on the right in the late 1700s,
especially in France and the US, when their wagons became bigger and had to be
pulled by teams of horses. The driver would sit on the last horse on the left side so that
his right hand could hold the whip he used to keep the horses moving. Since the driver
sat on the left, he kept to the right side of the road, so that he could avoid colliding with
the wheels of vehicles coming from the opposite side. As time passed and wars were
fought, defeated countries tended to adopt the driving customs of the winning nation; for
example, Napoleon’s victories spread right-side driving through much of Europe. The US
chose the right side after it gained its independence from England and decided to go
against the English practice.

• You can take your driving
test and get your driving
licence when you are 17
years old. Due to the well-
organised public transport
system, not so many
teenagers drive cars
before finishing school.
• Roundabouts are very
common in the UK, and
traffic travels in a
clockwise direction. • Teenagers can get their
driver’s license at 16 and
many do so almost
immediately, mostly because
most areas outside major
cities are not well connected
by public transport.
• There are significantly fewer
traffic circles than in the UK,
and vehicles travel around
them in an anticlockwise
direction.DRIVING FACTS
