Unabomber

Once a well-respected math prodigy, Ted Kaczynski came to national prominence thanks to a series of bombings that killed three people and injured nearly two-dozen others. About 16 bombs have been attributed to Kaczynski, nicknamed the Unabomber. He is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole and remains incarcerated at a supermax prison in Colorado.

Andrea Yates

Starting in 1999, she struggled with depression and psychosis, but had generally been happy with her husband Rusty Yates. Together, they had five children. Her fifth child’s birth and father’s death spurred something new in her, and her depression worsened. In 2001, after a stint in a treatment network, she was prescribed Haldol, an anti-psychotic. Only sixteen days later, while at work, Rusty Yates received a terrifying and disturbing phone call from his wife. She told him in simple terms that she had “[done] it.” He raced home to find that his wife had drowned their five children in the bathtub. During her trial, Yates’ defense was insanity. Despite this, she was sentenced to life in prison.

Over the course of about three weeks during the fall of 2002, more than a dozen people had been mysteriously shot by an unknown sniper in the Washington, D.C. suburbs. On one single day five people were murdered by the sniper in Maryland and D.C. Eventually, the massive manhunt ballooned to include 400 FBI agents. Lee Boyd Malvo and John Muhammad were arrested and convicted. Muhammad was executed in 2009, and Malvo, only 17 years old at the time of the murders, was sentenced to life in prison.

On January 15, 1947 the body of Elizabeth Short was found at Leimert Park in Los Angeles California. A woman who was walking with her daughter through a park when she saw what she thought was an abandoned mannequin. She soon realized that the body was a corpse and grabbed her daughter running for the nearest phone to call the police. Elizabeth Short’s body had been cut in half at the waist and her blood had been drained out. Her face had been cut from the corners of mouth to her ears to give her what people would call today the “Joker smile”. After it happened close to 50 men and women went to the LAPD claiming to be the killer, this made it very hard for police to determine the culprit. The Black Dahlia murder is one of the most famous unsolved murder cases in the world. The gruesome nature of the crime helped bolster its infamy. Over the years new evidence has been found, but many still believe that it is a murder that will never be solved.
