Software is a collection of instructions that tell a computer how to work. This is in contrast to hardware, from which the system is built and which actually performs the work. At the lowest programming level, executable code consists of machine language instructions supported by an individual processor—typically a central processing unit (CPU) or a graphics processing unit (GPU).

Types of the software, purpose
and characteristic
The software of modern computers includes many programs -
from gaming to scientific ones. The software is an integral part
of the computer system. It is a logical continuation of technical
means. The scope of the computer is determined by the
software created for it. Software for its intended purpose is
divided into system, tool and applied software.

Application software is designed to solve problems in
specific subject areas: scientific and technical,
economic, engineering, design, etc. Thus, each
application program is designed to solve a specific
task in a specific application.
System software includes operating systems (OS) and
service programs. The main part of the system software is
the operating system.
Instrumental software is a set of programs designed to
develop software applications and system software. The
software is designed to help programmers in their work, to
help software development managers in their efforts to
control the development process and the products they
receive.

operating systems
Operating systems have evolved from slow and expensive
systems to present-day technology where computing power has
reached exponential speeds and relatively inexpensive costs. In
the beginning, computers were manually loaded with program
code to control computer functions and process code related to
business logic.

Multi-user: Allows two or more users to run programs at the
same time Some operating systems permit hundreds or
even thousands of concurrent users. ex. Mainframes.
• Multiprocessing : Supports running a program on more
than one CPU.
• Multitasking : Allows more than one program to run
concurrently.
• Multithreading : Allows different parts of a single program
to run.
• Real time: Responds to input instantly. General-purpose
operating systems.
• such as DOS and UNIX, are not real-time.

CONCLUSION
Although there are different types of Computer Software and
operating systems. These software and operating systems used
in different sectors. Their operating process is also different.
Some types of Software works Graphically, some works on
Database Management System and some OS works on multiple
or single user interfaces, some on Word Processors etc. Day by
day software's are upgrading and by each day operating system
and software's are becoming more and more user friendly and
much more satisfying to use.
