GREETING Brainstorming Sports Students elicit sport types they know and the teacher records them on the board. The teacher asks if they know which sports are included in the list of Olympic Sports then circles any that are in this category on the board (football, tennis, swimming, cycling, running and basketball). |

Olympic Sports grid Tell sts to take out the Olympic Sports grid. Read the sport names and ask the students to repeat after you so as to correctly articulate them. Circulate the room to listen to the correct word-stress. Ask the students which sports sound like Kazakh and Russian words. Find out if any learners do these sports. Model how to ask and answer names of sports on worksheet grid e.g. Diving. A, 3. (Explain how to read the grid. Say the letter first, then the number.) A: What’s in A, 2? B: It is running. Tell students that they will watch a video and they should answer the questions written on the board. Play the video about Daniyar Yeleusinov. After the video, students should be able to answer the questions. SAMPLE: 1. What is the sport? 2. Who is the winner? 3. Where is he from? 4. What color is his medal? Language practice Write on board or put on a worksheet: 1. Which sports end with –ball? 2. Which sports end with –ing? 3. Which sports have two people? 4. Which sports have got a team? 5. Which sports are dangerous? 6. Which sport do you like? 7. Which sport do you …? 8. What kind of sports have got…? 9. Which sports have got two words? Differentiation Afterwards, they may give a short oral report.
