Mariam: Really it is so. You learn new words and grammar structures, don’t you?

Aidar: Yes, but it is partly right. Speaking shortly I try to follow the rule: learn speaking by speaking, learn reading by reading.

Mariam: Of course, it’s a good rule, but who are you speaking to?

Aidar: Oh, Mary! It is not the problem. Speaking ability is developed, I think, by listening comprehension. The most important task is to understand foreigners.

Mariam: Oh, I see you are a philosopher.

Aidar: Don’t joke, Mary! I think practically. From this point of view we have many opportunities.

Mariam: What are they?

Aidar: First. Every day I can listen to BBC news in English. Second, I watch TV programs in a day.

Mariam: But most pupils have no such opportunities.

Aidar: Well, if you want to do something you will find how to do it. If I purpose to know English well I’ll achieve the effect.

Mariam: The question is how…..

Aidar: How? As I have just told you: listening to BBC news in English everyday, watching TV programs three times a week. Don’t phone me from 8 to 9 p.m.
