Explain The First Conditional. (10 min) T-r writes a part of the model sentence on the board and asks for an ending. If I invite friends to a party, I will spend good time T elicits the first part of the sentence (If clause) – T clarifies meaning (future, realistic) – T clarifies form (Present Simple after if and Future Simple) – T collects Ss’ sample sentences Examples: If I play football, I will be fit. If I drive a car, I will be happy. If I eat a burger, I will not a hungry. If I have a dog, I will not have free time. – T shows the difference between IF and UNLESS If I do not play football, I will not be fit. Unless I play football, I won’t be fit. Do not/Doesn’t = Unless their similar NEGATIVE form T asks the Ss to write a sentence with negative form UNLESS T elicits the question form in workbook p 82 If you / they’ve got money, will you / they pay for me If he / she drives a car, will she/he be happy? RULES (2 min) Do with wordwall 1 We use the first conditional to talk about the results of actions which are likely or possible / unlikely or imaginary. 2 When if + present simple clause is first, there is / isn’t a comma between the two clauses. 3 We never / always use will in the if clause. 4 Unless + affirmative means the same as if + negative / affirmative.
