• Can and could are modal verbs that express possibility or ability. They’re also used to make a request or ask for permission.

• When referring to ability or possibility, can is used for present scenarios, whereas could is used in the past tense. In negative sentences can’t or couldn’t.

I could swim when I was nine years old.
