Theme of the lesson: Inventions.

Learning objectives:

Educational: creating conditions for improving speech skills, listening skills, reading skills with a detailed understanding of the content and with the aim of extracting specific information, listening skills.

Developing: develop cognitive interest, memory, attention, language guess.

Bringing up: to develop curiosity, cognitive interest, and ability to distribute attention, to involuntary memorization, to plan their statements, the ability to reproductive and productive speech actions

Forms and methods: group work, pair- work, individual; verbal, visual, practical.


Type of the lesson: introduction of a new material.

Learning materials: IP board, PPT, audio-file, worksheets.


Organization moment.

  1. Greeting.

Good morning, dear students. How are you today? I hope you are in a good mood today.

  1. Warm-up.

Today at the lesson we will speak about different inventions and their role in our life, advantages and disadvantages. As you know, our world is made of famous inventions. They replaced manual labor and gave people a lot of comfort.

The famous proverb says “Necessity is the mother of invention”. What does it mean?

The proverb means that the idea for inventions appears in our mind if we think there is something missing in our life and we need it badly. In Russian we say “Лень двигатель прогресса”.

Give me, please, the definition of the word ``to invent``. (To make, to create smth.)

Why do people invent different gadgets and appliances?

Possible answers:

They are lazy and want to make their life easier;

They want to earn some money;

They want to become famous;

They did it by accident;

They like doing it etc.

     Can we imagine our life without inventions? (It would be a difficult life, including hard every day labor)

- What modern inventions do you know? (A computer, a cell phone, a tablet,)

- How often do you use them? (We use them almost every day)

- What are the world greatest inventions for you? (Mobile phones, computers…)

- Do inventions make our life easier? (Yes, certainly, they make our life easier and more interesting.)

III. Main part.

  1. Speaking activities.

Task 1. Brainstorm.

What inventions in our everyday life do you know?

(pupils are given sheets of paper and they should write as many words as possible for inventions)



Task 2

Pupils read a list of inventions. Pupils read them and translate. (PPT)

1. Remote control, a skateboard, a personal computer, the Internet, an electric razor, a car,

a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine, a refrigerator, television, a mobile phone, a ballpoint pen.


Put the inventions in order of importance for

- Elderly people

- Young people

- A family couple

- Children

Four pupils explain their choice.


  1. Pre-listening activity.

Teacher makes a list of all vocabulary words according to the theme of the lesson. Then teacher gives pupils a large sheet of paper and asks them to fold it into 16 blocks. Students should number each box of this sheet from 1 up to 16. Students will use only 12 boxes. Students will need pens or pencils to write.

T: This is an activity in listening. I will name one number and read the definition of the invention. Your task is to guess, then write the name of the invention into proper square. You are to listen to the instructions carefully. You should only write not to name the words. Now, let`s play.

Take your sheets of paper and fold it in half, then do it three times.

  1. In box 10, write the name of a gadget, which helps us to communicate with one another. (A telephone).

  2. Box 3, It is a machine that prints documents from a computer. (A printer).

  3. Box 8, There is a device that you use for taking photographs: (a camera).

  4. In box 2, write the name of an invention like a box that shows moving colored pictures with sound. (a television).

  5. In box 6, a machine that helps us with washing of our dirty clothes. Before it, clothes were washed by hand in water with soap (a washing-machine).

  6. In box 1, we use it every day and it is very helpful. We put there a lot of things brought from the shop. It helps us to keep everything fresh and frozen. (a fridge )

  7. Box 7, we can find almost in every office and every flat. It helps us in our work, we can entertain ourselves watching films or connecting other people. And it is a main teacher`s helper. (A computer).

  8. In box 4, it is an electronic instrument that adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides. (A calculator).

  9. Box 12, it is a portable gadget that can store and play digital media. (MP3 player).

  10. In box 9, this device helps us to defrost and reheat the meal. (A microwave oven).

  11. In box 11, write the name of an invention that helps us to keep our homes tidy. It collects dust from floors. It has two wheels and a long hose. (a vacuum cleaner)

  12. Box 5, it helps us to get from one place to another by air. (an airplane)

9 Task 6

Finally, we will speak about advantages and disadvantages of some inventions. Let’s take the car, the mobile phone and television.

Каждой группе предлагается выбрать изобретение и рассказать о его значимости в современном мире. За предложенное время – 3-5 минут нужно составить 3-4 аргумента в пользу этого изобретения.

Advantages

the car

- to travel quickly wherever you want in comfort;

- to save time, not to depend on public transport;

- to be the element of prestige for the rich;

- to take part in race competitions. Etc.

the mobile telephone

- to communicate with people in any situation;

- to call an ambulance or the police in case of emergency;

- to get and send some information;

- to take pictures. Etc.

television

- to get news from all over the world;

- to learn new facts about other countries, people;

- to relax, to entertain, to listen to music;

- to watch a film. Etc.

Disadvantages

the car

- car accidents, people might be injured and even killed;

- after that they have psychological problems;

- after accidents people spend a lot of money on repairing and restoring the car;

- spend a lot of time in traffic jams;

- cars pollute the atmosphere with car exhausts.

the mobile phone

- a phone ring might be a serious distraction in a classroom;

- students can’t listen to the teacher or work if they send text messages or play games;

- might be dangerous for our health;

- breaks personal privacy;

- can be used by terrorists to blow a bomb.

television

- makes people addictive, they depend on a soap opera or a programme;

- damages health, bad for eyes;

- makes people lazy;

- shows a lot of violent scenes;

- makes people follow some images or ideas advertised by the TV.

2.10 Заключительный этап урока

1.1 подведение итогов урока, заключительное слово учителя;

1.2 объяснение домашнего задания: в качестве домашнего задания может быть предложении несколько вариантов:

- приготовить проект об истории какого-либо изобретения;

- написать эссе на тему “Мобильный телефон (“Автомобиль”, “Television”): за и против”;

- приготовить диалог с обсуждением значимости выбранного изобретения.

1.3 выставление оценок учащимся.
