Ask Ts to share statement about themselves to a group. To start, one person stands with a hand on hip and say something about himself/herself that is true. When someone hears something they have in common, they link elbows with the first person. The second person makes new statement to the group and so on. The process of sharing continuous one by one. |

Today we are going to share ideas how to create motivational atmosphere at the lesson. What is motivation? Motivation is a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way. What motivates you? 1. If someone in your family needs your help for several hours of hard work, which of these reasons would make you most likely to help? A. I would help because they are my family and I love them. B. If I help them, they will help me when I need it. C. If I don’t, it will strain family relations or make them angry. D. If I don’t, they will criticize me to other family members. 2. What can your boss offer you if he needs you to work extra carefully or extra long hours? A. Extra pay B. Job security C. Future promotion to a higher position D. Appreciation, respect, and the chance to help our company do better E. A threat: it will hurt your position in the company if you don’t (or you might be fired) 3. What are you willing to spend a large amount of money to buy? A. Things that will help my family B. Things that will keep my family and home safe C. Things that will make life more comfortable D. Things that make life more enjoyable E. Things that will save us money or are priced very well (big sales or discounts, etc.)

Put participants into groups of four. Hand out Participant’s Worksheet 1 and ask them to look at the list of teacher characteristics. They decide on the order of importance of these characteristics to be an effective teacher. 2. Feedback with the whole group so that participants can share ideas. Focus on the last characteristic on the list: The teacher knows her students well. Ask them: • Why is this an important characteristic? (the teacher knows students’ needs, reasons for learning English, likes and dislikes, etc) • Why is it important to know these things? (e.g. to keep students engaged, to maintain learner motivation)

In pairs, participants think about their own language learning and different students they have taught. They should make a list of the factors that influence motivation. Ask: • Why are some students motivated and others not? • Why do students come to class, and keep coming to class? Elicit an example: some students might need to know English better to do their job. Feedback with the whole group so that participants can share ideas (see key below) |

In pairs again, participants list their ‘top tips’ for ways in which teachers can maintain motivation in students. |

Give out Participant’s Worksheet 2 so participants can check their list of tips against the list in Exercise 1. |

Participants now look at the suggested strategies for maintaining student motivation in Exercise 2 and match them with the tips in Exercise 1. Check answers together (see key below). |
