All learners will be able to:

  • Identify the theme, new words and use them as the basis for discussion.

  • Demonstrate knowledge for usage of the modal verb "can" for ability and permission, making stories about abilities. Transfer information from the given information into a graphic organizer.

Most learners will be able to:

  • Select, compile, and synthesize information for an oral presentation

  • Provide a point of view in conversations and discussions; speak about people's abilities.

Some learners will be able to:

  • Respond to and discuss the reading passage using interpretive, evaluative and creative thinking skills.

  • Make a presentation about your activities at school and after school.

Task:1. Translate into Kazakh


  1. John can play football, but he can't play volleyball.

  2. John can ride a bike, but he can't ride a horse.

  3. Can he play the piano?

  4. Birds can fly and sing but they can’t speak.

  5. A horse can really run very fast and it can jump over fences.

  6. A cat can catch a mouse and it can climb trees.


We use can with the infinitive without to: I can swim.

We do not use do \ don’t in negatives and questions with can: I can’t swim.

We use can before subject in question sentence

Can you speak English well?

CAN – very independent, hardworking verb. He does not need helpers; he is a real hard worker, never naughty and works with all subjects.

CAN works in singular and plural in all persons.

INTRODUCTION OF A RULE: If you want to ask for permission, you put a modal verb can or could on the first place. Could is a more polite form.
