English anthroponyms and their lexico-semantics meanings

INTRODUCTION

The relevance of the research is due to the need to study the category of comparativeness in the mainstream of the functional semantic direction and the absence of special works that would be devoted to systematization and a comprehensive description of all possible linguistic means of expression of comparative meaning. Thus, the inventory of language facilities forming the peripheral zones of the FPCC was not studied in detail. In addition, special interaction was not affected by the interaction of the FPCC with the systems of other functional-semantic fields (FSP), the types of comparative categorical situations (hereinafter referred to as CC), peculiarities of functioning of the FPCC constitutions in national variants of the English language were not considered.

The aim of the research is to study the structure, semantics and laws of the functioning of linguistic units that represent the category of comparativeness in speech, on which such a systemic language education is based in modern English as the FPCC.

Proceeding from the stated goal, we assume the solution of the following problems:

1. Define the features of semantics (the content plan) and the system-structural expression (the expression plan) of the constituents of the FPCC.

2. Model the FPCC in modern English and study its structure.

3. Identify the main types of comparative CS and identify the interactions of the FPCC with other FSPs within the framework of conjugated CCs.

4. To establish the features and regularities of the use of the constituents of the FPCC in national variants of modern English: Brittany, American, Canadian and Australian.

To solve the tasks in the dissertation such methods as the method of field structuring, the method of vocabulary definitions, elements of the contextological method and seminal analysis, elements of quantitative calculation were used in the thesis.

This investigation is devoted to the study of the functional-semantic field of the comparative ™ (hereinafter FPCC) in modern English.

During the last decades, in the domestic and foreign linguistics, a tendency to study linguistic phenomena predominates in the light of the semantic-syntactic and functional-semantic approaches, taking into account the fact that the priority is the latter, in which the analysis is predominantly from functions to means . Such a tendency can be explained by the fact that the interest of linguists is focused on the study of the language as a means of communication and on the problems of interaction between language and reality.

The object of the research - units of different levels of language used to convey the meanings of equality / inequality and are united on the basis of the commonality of the semantic function performed by them in the FPCC in modern English.

The theoretical significance of the work is to deepen our understanding of the systemic nature of the FSP in the English language and the laws governing the functioning of its constituents in speech. The results of the research contribute to the systematization of ways of expressing the meaning of comparativeness, as well as further development of problems of functional grammar.

The scientific novelty of the work consists in a multifaceted study of the category of comparativity and the means of its expression in the modern English language. In the thesis a complex of different levels of expression of comparative semantics is singled out, the structure of the FSPK is specified. Specific features of the functioning of comparative CS and conjugated CS comparativeness are revealed in the British, American, Canadian and Australian versions of the co-temporal English language. The material of the study was 5000 examples, selected by the method of continuous sampling from the works of fiction of contemporary English, American, Australian and Canadian writers.

The practical value of the thesis is that its main provisions and results can be used in courses of theoretical and practical grammar, in the course of stylistics, in a special course on functional grammar, as well as in writing master's theses, diploma and term papers.

The general theoretical basis of the thesis was the work of G.S. Shchura A.B. Bondarko, E.V. Guligi, E.I. Shenlands, devoted to both the general field theory in linguistics and the theory of functional semantic fields in particular. While modeling the FPCC, we were guided by the research of domestic and foreign linguists in the field of functional grammatics: A.B. Bondarko, Yu.N. Vlasova, Yu.P. Knyazeva, A.B. Mikhaleva, H.A. Slyusareva, M. Posta, P. Hendricks and others.

The results of this study were tested in reports at the scientific conferences of students and postgraduates of the Rostov State Pedagogical University, at the international pedagogical conference "Regional Collaboration to Foster Global English", at a scientific conference dedicated to the memory of prof. T.V. Valimova, at scientific and methodological conferences "Personality, Speech and Law Practice". The material of the thesis was discussed at sessions of the Department of English Philology of the Russian State Pedagogical University.

The main content of the thesis is reflected in 2 publications. Provisions to be put forward:

1. Comparison, being a universal-mental category, is closely connected not only with the categories of quality and quantity, but also with such concepts as property, attribute, evaluation. The variety of different-level language means expressing different types of comparative relations allows us to consider a system of ways of conveying the meaning of comparativeness in modern English within the framework of the corresponding functional-semantic field, which is based on the functional semantic category of comparativeness, which is a linguistic interpretation universal-mental category of comparison.

2. The functional-semantic field of comparativeness is a system of morphological, lexical, word-formative and syntactical means of the language, united by the commonality of the semantic function performed by them, consisting in the expression of the equality / inequality of objects or phenomena, the degree of manifestation of quality, this object or action.

3. In modern English, the functional-semantic field of comparativity is a monocentric field that is part of the grouping of fields with a qualitative-quantitative core and is characterized by a wide range of connections with fields belonging to other groups. Two microfields are distinguished on the horizontal section of the FPCC: the microfield of equality and the microfield of inequality, since the end result of the comparison process is always the establishment of relations of equality or inequality of objects / phenomena.

4. Investigation of regularities of the use of constituents of the functional-semantic field of comparativeness in the utterance makes it possible to distinguish several types of comparative categorical situations, to establish the interaction of this field with other FSPs, which is found in conjugate categorical situations. The analysis of comparative and conjugate categorical situations in national variants of modern English indicates the different frequency of their realization, and also reveals the presence of regional variation in some ways of representing comparativeness in the utterance.

Volume and structure of work. The thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusion, a bibliography.

In the introduction, the actuality of the topic of the research is substantiated, its scientific novelty, the purpose and tasks of the work are formulated, its theoretical and practical significance, the object and methods of research are determined.

The first chapter contains general theoretical provisions describing the logical and linguistic nature of comparison, examines the main approaches to the study of the category of comparativeness in linguistics, and also explains the feasibility of a functional semantic approach to the investigation of this category.

In the second chapter, the degree of comparison of adjectives and adverbs, as well as syntactic constructions and adjuncts, in which they function, are subjected to semantic analysis, structural and semantic features of different-level linguistic means of expressing the value of comparativeness are studied, the structure of the FPCC is modeled, microfields in its composition.

In conclusion, the results of the study are summarized.

The bibliography includes 60 titles of works of domestic and foreign linguists, quoted or used in writing the research.

CONCLUSION

1. A comparative CS is defined as a typical content structure expressed in a statement in one form or another based on the FSCC and representing that side of the general significative situation transmitted in the statement that is related to the representation of the equality / inequality relations, to a greater or lesser degree of the quality of objects, objects or phenomena of the surrounding reality. Speaking of comparative CS, we mean standard CCs, each of which contains a special aspect of the comparative characteristic of objects or phenomena of real reality perceived by the speaker in the process of utterance. We have identified 4 types of comparative CS: comparative CS, associated with the characteristics of objects or phenomena as equal / unequal in terms of quality; comparative CS, associated with the characteristics of objects or phenomena as equal / unequal in terms of quantity; comparative CS, associated with the characteristic of the object or phenomenon as superior to all of them similar for a certain quality; comparative CS, associated with the characteristic of an object or phenomenon that has a similarity to a certain quality or is approaching this quality.

2. Study of the implementation of the selected types of comparative CS in Br. V., Am. V., Can. V. and Austria. V. showed that the data of the COPs are implemented in these national variants with varying degrees of frequency. Thus, according to the material of our sample, the most frequent frequencies are comparative CSs associated with the characterization of objects or phenomena as equal / unequal in terms of quality, which are updated by the nuclear and perinuclear constituents of the FPCC. The peculiarities of regional variation differ only in word-formative linguistic means, which actualize in the utterance the comparative CS, associated with the characterization of an object or phenomenon as superior to all of them similar for a certain quality. Local marking in AvgGR. B, there are lexical units that appear in the composition of comparative CS, associated with the characteristic of the object or phenomenon that has a similarity to a certain quality or is approaching this quality.

3. Given the fact that the FSCC is not an isolated linguistic phenomenon, the nature of the relationship between the FPCC and other fields was established, and six types of conjugated CS were identified: conjugated comparative-quantitative CSs conjugated by comparative-quantitative CS, conjugate comparative-intensive CS conjugate comparative-modal CS, conjugate comparative-approximate CS, conjugate comparative-temporal CS, conjugate comparative-conditional CS.

4. The study of the implementation of conjugated CS conformance in national variants of modern English showed that the most stable links of the FPCK have with FSPKv, FSGTI, FPSM, FSPAp. Frequency implementation of coupled CS, revealing the relationship of the FPCC and FSPT, FSPC and FSPU allows us to say that the FPCC links with these fields are somewhat weaker. Regarding regional variation, it is observed in the field of phraseology, namely, the functioning of the CFE in the conjugated comparative-modal CS. This fact is due to the

the national cultural component, as well as the specific realities of a particular territorial language area.
