  • Teacher introduces learning and lesson objectives

  • Today’s lesson objectives are:

  1. You will be able to read the text and decide if you know or not vocabulary of the text

  2. You will be able to understand the main idea and explain to another group

  3. You will be able to complete the sentences based on the text.

  • Students write the date, day and the theme of the lesson into their copybooks.

  • Divide the class into three groups


First group: They will be in this group if they get the picture of the game, in which we use the verb ‘play’

Second group: They will be in this group if they get the picture of the game, in which we use the verb ‘do’

Third group: They will be in this group if they get the picture of the game, in which we use the verb ‘go’


  1. Basketball(A1); volleyball(A2); tennis(A3); golf (observer)

  2. Karate(B1); judo(B2); gymnastics (B3)

  3. Swimming(C1); skiing(C2); ice skating (C3)

Identification of sports

Aim: To identify sports; to personalise the topic

  • Ask Ss to get into pairs.

  • Ss look at the pictures. Ss discuss what sports are represented and if they play/do them.

  • Monitor the activity around the class.

Suggested Answer Key

The pictures show cycling (a bike and a helmet), boxing (a pair of boxing gloves) and football (a ball). I play football and go cycling.

Listening for gist (W/I)

Aim: To listen and read for specific information

  • Explain how a sport can make a nation famous (people from that country winning Olympic medals, international championships, etc.)

  • Play the recording. Ss listen and read the text.

  • Elicit answers from Ss.

  • Each team should mark known information with the sign ‘+’, unknown information with ‘-‘, they want to know ‘?’

  • They can mark either vocabulary or information.

  • Change their places and explain information. They change their places according to the following scheme:

A1 – B1 – C1

A2 –B2 – C2

A3 – B3 – C3
