Theme of the lesson: Role playing «Job Interview»

Aim of the lesson: to develop students’ job interview skills by simulating real-life interview scenarios, allowing them to practice answering common interview questions and demonstrating professionalism in a role-playing setting.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the structure and purpose of a job interview, including the roles of both interviewer and interviewee.

  • Identify and respond appropriately to common job interview questions, demonstrating confidence and clear communication.

  • Use professional language and body language in a mock job interview situation.

  • Provide constructive feedback to peers on their interview performance.

  • Reflect on personal performance in the role-play and identify areas for improvement in future real-life interviews.

Teaching Materials:

  1. Handouts:

    1. List of common job interview questions.

    2. Tips on interview etiquette and body language.

  2. Role-Play Scenarios:

    1. Pre-designed role-play interview prompts (different job positions: e.g., marketing, IT, customer service).

  1. Job Descriptions:

    1. Several job descriptions tailored to the positions being role-played (optional).

  1. Presentation slides (optional) – Overview of the do’s and don’ts of job interviews.

  2. Whiteboard/Markers – For writing down key phrases, interview techniques, and vocabulary.

  3. Timer/Clock – To time the role-playing activities.

  4. Name tags – To assign roles such as "Interviewer" and "Interviewee."

  5. Video/Audio recording device (optional) – For recording and reviewing role-plays.

  6. Rubric for Peer Feedback:a simple checklist or rubric for students to assess each other’s performance in the interview.

Plan of the lesson

Lesson Structure:

1. Introduction

  • Begin by discussing the importance of job interviews in the professional world.

  • Ask students what kind of experiences they’ve had with interviews (if any), and introduce key concepts such as first impressions, professionalism, and self-presentation.

  • Go over the structure of a typical job interview: introductions, questions, closing.

2. Teaching: Job Interview Techniques )

  1. Present common job interview questions, such as:

  • "Tell me about yourself."

  • "What are your strengths and weaknesses?"

  • "Why should we hire you?"

  • "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

  1. Go over strategies for answering these questions, emphasizing:

  • Clear, concise communication.

  • Highlighting relevant experiences.

  • Maintaining professional body language (eye contact, posture).

  1. Provide tips on what not to do during an interview (e.g., being unprepared, interrupting the interviewer).

3. Pair Work:

  • Split the class into pairs or small groups. Assign one person to be the Interviewer and the other the Interviewee.

  • Hand out job descriptions or prompts based on different industries.

  • Each pair will role-play the interview process, with the Interviewer asking a set of 5-6 common interview questions.

  • After 5-10 minutes, the roles will switch, allowing everyone to practice both being an interviewer and an interviewee.

Dialogue («Job interview»)

Players:

  • Author(Saltanat);

  • 2 employees(Nurshat,Miras);

  • Director(Aibar);

  • Secretary(Inkar).

Part I

Author:

Employee 1 (Miras):"Oh, hey, John! Didn’t expect to see you here. Heading to the same floor?"

Employee 2 (Nurshat):"Hey,Miras! Yeah, just heading up to the 5th floor. Got a meeting with the marketing team. You?"

Employee 1 (Miras):"Same! I’ve got a project update meeting with them. Busy day?"

Employee 2 (Nurshat):"Tell me about it! Back-to-back meetings all morning. I’ve barely had time to grab a coffee. How about you?"

Employee 1 (Miras):"Same here. I’m juggling two deadlines this week, so it’s been a bit crazy. But hey, at least it’s Friday, right?"

Employee 2 (Nurshat):"Exactly. Just got to power through today. Any fun plans for the weekend?"

Employee 1 (Miras):"Not really. Probably just catching up on some sleep and maybe watching that new series on Netflix. What about you?"

Employee 2 (Nurshat):"Sounds good! I’m planning a quick getaway to the beach. Need to recharge after this hectic week."

Employee 1 (Miras):"Nice! That sounds perfect. Well, here’s our floor. Guess it’s time for another meeting!"

Employee 2 (Nurshat):"Yep, let’s do this. Good luck with your project update, Miras!"

Employee 1 (Miras)::"Thanks! You too, Nurshat.

Part II

Secretary:"Good morning! Welcome to Company Hilton. How can I help you today?"

Employee 1 (Nurshat):"Good morning! We’re both here to ask about any job openings. We’ve heard great things about your company and would love to know if there are any positions available."

Secretary:"Thank you for your interest! Do you have specific roles in mind, or are you open to various positions?"

Employee 2 (Miras):"Well, I have experience in project management and operations, so I’d be interested in roles within that area."

Employee 1 (Nurshat):"And I’m looking for something in marketing or communications. I have a background in digital marketing."

Secretary:"Let me take a look... [typing]. It seems we have a few positions open in both departments. For project management, there’s a project coordinator role, and for marketing, we have an opening for a digital marketing specialist. Would you both like to submit your resumes for those roles?"

Employee 2 (Miras):"Yes, that sounds perfect. I have my resume with me right here."

Employee 1 (Nurshat):"Same here! I’ve got mine ready too."

Secretary:"Great! I’ll pass your resumes along to the HR team. They usually review applications within a few days. Would either of you like to speak with someone from HR now?"

Employee 2 (Miras):"If they’re available, that would be great!"

Secretary:"Let me check... [calling HR]. HR is available to meet with you in about 10 minutes. You can wait here in the lobby, and I’ll let you know when they’re ready."

Employee 1 (Nurshat):"Thank you! That would be great."

Employee 2 (Miras):"Yeah, thanks so much for your help!"

Secretary:"My pleasure! I’ll bring you some water while you wait. Just make yourselves comfortable."

Part III

Director(Aibar):"Good morning, and thank you for coming in today. How are you?"

Employee:"Good morning! I’m doing well, thank you. I appreciate the opportunity to be here."

Director:"Great to hear. Let’s start by having you tell me a little about yourself and your professional background."

Employee:"Sure! I have a degree in Marketing and over five years of experience in digital marketing and brand management. In my last role, I was responsible for overseeing the company’s social media strategy, managing campaigns, and increasing engagement by 40% within a year. I’m passionate about creating innovative marketing strategies and driving growth."

Director:"That’s impressive. Could you tell me more about the project where you increased engagement? What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?"

Employee:"Absolutely. One of the biggest challenges was shifting the focus of our content to match changing audience preferences. Our data showed that our target demographic was more responsive to video content, so we pivoted toward that. I coordinated with the creative team to produce a series of short, engaging videos and worked closely with the analytics team to monitor performance. This adaptive approach helped us boost engagement significantly."

Director:"It sounds like you’re very data-driven, which is a great fit for our team. How do you approach collaboration with other departments? We highly value cross-functional teamwork here."

Employee:"I believe strong communication is key to successful collaboration. I make it a point to understand each department’s goals and challenges so we can align on strategies. In my previous job, I regularly coordinated with the sales and product teams to ensure our marketing efforts supported overall business objectives."

Director:"That’s good to hear. Let me shift to a more forward-looking question: What are your career goals, and how do you see this position fitting into them?"

Employee:"My long-term goal is to move into a leadership position where I can guide a team in developing innovative marketing strategies. I see this role as a great opportunity to deepen my skills in a larger organization, collaborate with more experienced professionals, and contribute to the overall growth of the company."

Director:"Excellent. I think we’re aligned in terms of expectations and vision. Do you have any questions for me about the role or the company?"

Employee:"Yes, I’d love to learn more about the team I’d be working with and the company’s plans for growth in the next few years."

Director:"Sure. You’d be joining a team of five marketing professionals, and we have some exciting projects in the pipeline focused on expanding our digital presence globally. We’re aiming for a 20% growth in international markets over the next two years."

Employee:"That sounds exciting! I think my experience would be a great fit for those goals."

Director:"Based on what we’ve discussed, I agree. We’ll be in touch soon with next steps, but I want to say thank you again for your time today."

Employee:"Thank you for the opportunity. I look forward to hearing from you!"

Director:"Have a great day!"

4. Group Feedback and Discussion

After the role-playing activity, bring the class together for feedback.

  • Encourage students to provide constructive feedback to their peers based on what they observed during the role-play:

  • Was the candidate’s communication clear?

  • Did they use professional language and body language?

  • How could they improve their responses?

  • As a teacher, highlight good examples from the students and areas where the class could improve.

5. Reflection and Self-Evaluation

Ask students to reflect on their performance. Hand out the rubric/checklist and have them self-assess:

  • What did they do well?

  • What could they improve next time?

  • How confident do they feel now compared to the start of the lesson?

6. Conclusion

  • Summarize the key points learned in the lesson.

  • Encourage students to apply these techniques in real-world scenarios.

  • Open the floor for questions or final thoughts.

Assessment

Formative:

  • Observing participation during the role-play and giving immediate feedback.

  • Peer-to-peer feedback on interview performance.

Summative:

  • Self-reflection worksheets or rubrics assessing how well students understood interview dynamics and executed the role-play.

Differentiation Options:

  • Advanced learners can be assigned more challenging interview scenarios, such as leadership positions or technical roles, with more complex questions.

  • Lower-level learners can focus on basic interview questions and answers, with teacher guidance and support.

  • Video recording role-plays (if available) can provide an opportunity for students to review their performance and reflect on their body language, tone, and responses.
