The future of
Architecture in Kazakhstan

The formation of Kazakhstan's
architecture is a part of the newest history of the state. In some
cities of Kazakhstan, there is a war between the old city – the
buildings of the soviet era and the new one – the Alucobond era.
Historical heritage is certainly very important, but this should
not stop the future. In this case, it is important to maintain a
balance between the old and the new. There should be no position
that we will not touch the building at all costs or demolish it in
spite of everything. There is
cooperation.
There are certain cliches
about the architecture and urbanism of Central Asia. Of course,
there are the historic cities of the Silk Road, mostly in
Uzbekistan – the minarets and domes of Samarkand, Bukhara and
Khiva, long explored by travellers to the Orient. But when it comes
to anything later, the image is of an empty desert or steppe where
despotic rulers have imposed a turbo-capitalist dystopia, best
suited for Instagram accounts and photo-heavy travelogues. Yet the
city of Nur-Sultan recently disproved this biases. Apital of
Kazakhstan rises, shimmering in blues, whites, golds, and
demonstrated jarring contrast against the land of the Kazakh Steppe
Today, the flashy architecture of one of the world’s youngest
capitals draws tourists and photographers
alike.
The architecture, in
particular the interior, is determined by the mentality. In the
interior of particular Kazakhstan projects, which has been planned
by the foreign architectures, there is a lot of light, you can see
the sky, it is a space in which freedom is felt. Planners used
elements of high architecture: the right height of the ceilings,
the columns inside the building. At the same time, the part of the
interior that is located in
the zone accessible to a
person is decorated with "warm" natural materials that "heat" the
space. All this reflects the character and mentality of our
nation.
Examples of modern cities that
are recognized leaders in the use of the latest approaches to urban
planning show that architecture as an art can ennoble a person and
elevate him above everyday life, fill life with comfort and take
care of future generations. And to do this, it is necessary to
comply with the standards of energy-efficient construction,
environmentally friendly materials, energy-saving buildings, that
is, to build with the principles of sustainable development,
thereby solving certain social problems. And that is exactly what
we are striving to. Also for Kazakhstan, this ideology is
especially important, given that the theme of EXPO-2017 is declared
as "Energy of the Future".
The findings that I have
presented suggest that the style of architecture of the particular
nation depend on mentality, customs and mind set of its culture,
rather than building heritage that they have acquired. Future of
architecture in Kazakhstan will certainly be bright if we keep on
constructing innovative buildings based on our wide, freely and
hospitable nature. Also we should constantly develop our
engineering and urban planning technologies. And we will. Because
as the architect Sergio Gomez said: Kazakhs are people who live in
the present, but are focused on the
future.
