Exercise 11. Read the text : A TWELVE -YEAR-OLD SERVANT

I left school when I was twelve and I had to get into service. I went to a young couple who were farmers, and I had to live in. It was about fifteen miles from home and it seemed to me the back of beyond. It was a big rambling place, and I was the only help they had. I got one and three pence a week. They weren't bad to me, but they used to go out a lot and I'd be in the place on my own. I'd go and look in all the cupboards, under beds, I was in. literally terrified. I helped the mistress make butter, and sometimes I used to milk the cows as well. Anyway, I didn't last long. I got so lonely. I went to a butcher wife near Welling borough. She was a terror. There was another maid there, and fortunately we got on well together. We could laugh and cover up for each other if we did anything wrong. We slept in an attic, and we had to be up at six o'clock in the morning. If we were a minute or two late, she’d be there and want to know why. I reckon she laid awake all night long, in the pleasure of catching us out in the morning.

I had fifteen places in twelve years, and only at one of them was I treated like a human being. They didn't think of us as people like themselves. We were different. Occasionally my father and brother used to come and see in. and I felt really unhappy when they left.

Exercise 11. Read the text : LOST CHILDHOOD, LOST FUTURE

A 14-year-old boy grimaces as he struggles to haul a giant fishing net hom the angry waves that crash below him. For nine months, Bounali Kliuumora (Boo-nah-lee See-mamoor-ah) has toiled seven days a week, 10 hours a day, on a rickety fishing pier stranded in the middle of the ocean, 10 mill's off the coast of Indonesia. As he sorts his catch, Bounali is careful to livoid the painful sting of jellyfish and sea snakes tangled in the net.

"1 work from 8 in the morning until 6 at night", says Bounali, wiping sweat nil his forehead as the sun beats down on him. "Every morning, I wake up, Koil I he fish, dry them, %>oil them, and put them into storage. Then, I wait for 11u- tide to go down and do it again".

Bounali is one of 120 million children worldwide, between the ages of 5 .iml 14, who are working instead of attending school.

Exercise 6, you are going to read the articles about two young people without jobs. The article is called "Life on the Dole". Do you understand the title?

Aset 25, could not find a job when he left school, so he went to college. He passed his exam, but he is no nearer to getting a job now.

"I get 1000 tg. a week benefit, but it doesn't go far", said Aset.

Aset goes to the job sentre every week. "I'm at a difficult age", he said. "I want to do electronics or engineering, but most firms with training schemes want someone younger than me".

Most Aset's college friends found work, so the days are long and lonely. Asan worked as a plumber for three years. Now he is on the dole he says he feels poorer than a school leaver who has never had any money. His last wages were 5000 tg. a week. But now he gets unemployment benefit of only 1200 tg. a week.

If he does not get a job soon, he is going to sell his car. "I only use it when I go to a job centre or to interviews", he says. "When I go out in the evenings, I walk. Petrol is so expensive".

But even without a job, Asan has a busy time. He goes three or four job centres every week, and he keeps fit with football.

"My Dad always told me to get a good training", he says. "Two weeks ago I went to listen to a talk about starting your own business. If I don't find a job soon, I'm going to work for myself.

Redundancy is now common in many countries. People are losing their jobs because business is bad. What do these people do when they have no job and lose their wages? Firstly, every redundant worker must decide how to spend his "golden handshake" - his redundancy payment. Most people either spend it all at once, or use it to live on until they find a new job. But souk-people start a new life with it.

Exercise 4 Read TEN GOLDEN RULES FOR YOUR LETTER OF APPLICATION

  1. Write clearly.

  2. Keep your letter short and to the point.

  3. State what job you are applying for.

  4. Make the information you give relevant to the job, and firm, so read the advertisement carefully first.

  5. Use plain writing paper and ink, not pencil. Or type your letter if you can do it neatly.

P 212-213. Read Объектная Причастная Конструкция – сочетание определенных глаголов с некоторыми формами причастия. Эта конструкция выполняет в предложении функцию сложного дополнения.

The Object Participial Construction с причастием настоящего времени.

После глаголов чувственного восприятия (see, hear, feel, watch, notice…) употребляется существительное в общем падеже, или местоимение в объектном падеже + причастие настоящего времени. Значение этой конструкции лучше рассматривать на примерах с переводами. В переводе этой конструкции всегда присутствуют союзы что или как.


I heard her singing once. Однажды я слышал, как она поет (пела).

Сравним: Once I heard how she was signing.


The teacher noticed the pupils cheating at the exam.

Учитель заметил, что ученики жульничают (жульничали) на экзамене.

Сравним: The teacher noticed that the pupils were cheating at the exam.


I see you swimming in the pool every morning.

Я вижу, как ты купаешься в бассейне по утрам.

Сравним: I see how you swim every morning.


В этой конструкции возможно употребление Present Participle Passive:

I like to watch roads being cleaned at night.

Мне нравится наблюдать, как по ночам моют(ся) дороги.

Сравним: I like to watch how roads are cleaned at night.


We saw a wall being painted by teenagers.

Мы видели, как подростки рисовали на стене.

Сравним: We saw how a wall was being painted by teenagers.


Примечание:

Наряду с Participle I в данной объектной конструкции употребляется инфинитив глагола без частицы TO. Соответственно, в этом случае данная конструкция уже не является причастной. Но инфинитив глагола здесь употребляется также часто, как и Participle I, а смысловая разница между этими вариантами не очень большая, а многие ее вообще не замечают. Эта разница очень важная.


The tourists saw him swim across the river

Туристы видели, как (что) он переплыл реку.


The tourists saw him swimming across the river

Туристы видели, как (что) он плыл / переплывал через реку.


Итак, после перевода, казалось бы, идентичных предложений смысловая разница между ними стала очевидна.

Употребление в конструкции инфинитива показывает: отмечено, как объект начинает действие;

отмечено, как объект заканчивает действие. То есть действие находится «под наблюдением» от начала до конца.

Употребление в конструкции причастия настоящего времени показывает:

не ясно, находится ли действие «под наблюдением» с самого начала;

не факт, что действие находится «под наблюдением» до самого конца. То есть, возможно, туристы просто увидели человека плывущего через реку и пошли дальше по своим делам.

Английские идиомы (Idioms) – это устойчивые выражения, которые нельзя перевести слово в слово. Эти сочетания на редкость непредсказуемы и запросто смогут поставить вас в тупик. Например, известное «It is raining cats and dogs» - это «льет как из ведра», а не то, что подумали бы неискушенные учащиеся.

Идиомы английского языка, как и многие другие явления, могли быть как созданы на основе родной британской культуры, так и заимствованы из других языков. Их объединяет одно: перевод идиом – дело настолько тонкое, что к нему обязательно нужно привлекать словарь. А еще лучше – носителя языка, который сможет не только подробно объяснить, когда и как они употребляются, но и дать пару примеров.

Как же разнообразить свою речь и щеголять знанием английских идиом перед собеседниками? Ответ прост до безобразия: сесть и выучить их. Но не огорчайтесь, обычную зубрежку можно сделать гораздо более эффективной и интересной, если, во-первых, сгруппировать идиоматические выражения по темам, и, во-вторых, обязательно учить их с опорой на родной язык.

When something is all in a day’s work, it is part of the routine and there is nothing special about it.

Cooking and cleaning are all in a day’s work.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

This idiom means that you can’t be a happy person if you don’t have fun.

Get up and have some fun. You have been sitting at that computer for well over eight hours. Don’t you know that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?

Get down to work

To get down to work is to start focusing on an important task.

We have got to finish this task today itself so let’s get down to work.

Get worked up

To get worked up over something is to get annoyed or excited about something.

Rumors about Apple products are a dime a dozen and it is awfully easy to get worked up about something that doesn’t exist at all.

Make short work of something

To make short work of something is to do it quickly.

Give it to Peter. He will make short work of it.

How do you work? get your feet under the table = get settled in: "It only took him a week to get his feet under the table, then he started to make changes."

burn the candle at both ends = work day and night at something: "He's been burning the candle at both ends to finish this project."

knuckle under = stop wasting time and start working: "The sooner you knuckle under and start work, the better."

put pen to paper = start writing: "She finally put pen to paper and wrote the letter."

work all the hours that God sends = work as much as possible: "She works all the hours that God sends to support her family."

work your fingers to the bone = work very hard: "I work my fingers to the bone for you."

go the extra mile = do more than is expected of you: "She's a hard worker and always goes the extra mile."

pull your weight = do your fair share of the work: "He's a good team worker and always pulls his weight."

pull your socks up = make a better effort: "You'll have to pull your socks up and work harder if you want to impress the boss!"

put your feet up = relax: "At last that's over – now I can put my feet up for a while."
