THE APP
Introduction
Among foreign languages, English is in the first place and has long reached the international level. Today, English is used everywhere – business, travel, science, education, the Internet, movies and much more. English unites people and helps to gain knowledge from many sources of information.
Unfortunately, not all students realize the importance of learning English, do not see the practical application of the language in the future.
The relevance of this topic lies in the fact that English has actually become the language of world communication, and modern schoolchildren need to realize the importance of studying it.
Our goal is to identify the main motives for learning English by teenage students and determine what causes them the greatest interest during lessons.
On the way to achieve our goal, we need to solve the following tasks:
- to study the scientific literature on this issue;
- conduct a survey of 6th grade students about their interests;
- analyze the collected material and come to a certain conclusion.
When writing a research paper, the following methods were used:
1. experimental for conducting a questionnaire and determining the goals of learning English;
2. search and descriptive, involving the analysis of language factors;
3. analytical, involving a comparative analysis of the data obtained.
Our work is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part, we examined the existing reasons why people start learning a foreign language, in particular English. The second part of the paper presents the results of processing the questionnaires received.
1. Theoretical part
1.1 The main goals of learning a foreign language by teenagers
It is impossible not to agree with the author's statements that English is very important for a modern person. Everyone pursues their own goals when learning English and these goals are diverse.
But what are the main goals of learning English from our peers? What attracts each of us to doing this interesting and useful thing? It is much easier to learn when there is a specific goal, when there is something to strive for. Motivation is very important in training, since its lack leads to the fact that a person becomes bored late or early, uninteresting and he drops out of school.
At first glance, it may seem that the question is banal, but its importance should not be underestimated in any case. If your goal of learning a foreign language is only the fact that everyone studies it, then this is unlikely to help you.
Let's try to consider the most common areas of application of the English language:
1. Travel.
The most pleasant and interesting goal. It's scary to be in a country where you don't understand what they say, what they write, you don't know how to ask anything. Knowing at least a standard set of tourist phrases, getting acquainted with historical and cultural monuments, it will be easier for you to travel and make friends with the locals. You will have more benefits over other vacationers.
It's no secret that in almost all corners of the world, employees working in the tourism sector know English. In addition, all road signs, inscriptions in public places and voice announcements are duplicated in English. Information in English is present on almost all travel documents, baggage receipts and even restaurant menus. So it's safe to say that a person who knows English will not experience discomfort in any country in the world.
You will easily be able to find a common language with foreigners to communicate or learn something from them; during excursions you will know what the guide is talking about; you will not get lost in the city, since you know the language; you will be able to easily find the place you are interested in in the city; and, ultimately, it is better you will learn the country by communicating with the residents of this country. [2]
2. One of the most important factors for learning English is professional necessity. Whatever job you would not get, most likely, you will encounter the column "Foreign languages". With today's competition in the labor market, this graph can play in your favor if you know foreign languages. Of course, knowledge of the language does not guarantee getting a good job, but with the same professional skills, knowledge of a foreign language is a huge plus. [2] Since English is considered the language of business, most companies require an employee to know this language. Interestingly, this trend is widespread all over the world and it very often happens that business partners from countries for which English is not their native language negotiate in it. Now there are many international companies, as well as companies that cooperate with other countries.
Another important incentive for learning a language is the opportunity to get a translator position.
3. Watching movies without translation. With cable TV, you can watch movies and programs from many countries. But for this, again, you need to know English, since most TV channels are in English. And it is much more interesting to watch foreign films without translation, since the voice and intonation of the actors are heard.
4 Listening to music. After all, how nice it is to understand what your favorite foreign performer is singing about! And the songs themselves become more interesting when you listen to them, understanding what they are sung about.
5. Expanding the circle of communication. The Internet has expanded the possibilities of communication as never before, now you can easily communicate with a person from any country. Knowledge of English helps to find interesting friends and expand the circle of acquaintances, thanks to which life becomes brighter and richer.
6. Diversify your life. Everyone has some hobbies that bring interesting and exciting moments to life. A good hobby is learning a foreign language. When a previously unknown language becomes understandable, you can understand others and express yourself when the opportunity arises.[2]
It never hurts to know a foreign language. This expands the horizon of your opportunities in life. None of us knows what benefit this knowledge can bring you tomorrow.
1.2 Possible reasons for the lack of interest of students in grades 5 in a foreign language
Parents are very often faced with the fact that they cannot exert much influence on the learning process of their children. In rare families, there are no conflicts between a teenager and his parent. But this is not due to the fact that teenagers are not able to learn. They like to study, but not under the control of teachers and parents, but based on their interests. [1]
A characteristic feature of teenagers is that they are very inquisitive, they are open to everything new, but at the same time they are closed to the knowledge that is imposed on them by other people (teachers, parents). They study a lot of information on the Internet and books on topics studied at school. They strive to learn as much as possible about everything.
They are ready to learn not for the sake of evaluation, they are ready to learn if they are interested, if the knowledge they have gained resonates in their soul. They want adults to treat them as equals. At the same time, they reject any control and assistance.
Teenagers are most focused on developing their communication skills. They strive to spend as much time as possible with their peers. It is from them that they are ready to receive knowledge.
Teenagers like practical knowledge more, theories occupy them much less. They strive to find confirmation of their knowledge in experiments.[1]
Thus, it is extremely important for a teenager to be aware of how the acquired knowledge can be applied in life today, and not in many, many years. It is necessary to have a real opportunity to communicate in a foreign language and preferably with peers, to read literature in a foreign language that is related to his interests. If a teenager is interested in the content of the book, he will master any difficult work.
In turn, teenagers who do not realize the practical importance of the English language do not have the slightest desire to study the subject and, accordingly, do not see the point of studying it.
2. Practical part
2.1 Analysis of the results obtained
In order to determine the main goals of learning English among peers, we conducted a survey among 5th grade students of secondary school No. 3 named after A.Moldagulova.
Students were asked to answer 2 questions by choosing no more than two options from the suggested ones. (Appendix 1)
The first question helped us to identify the main goals, and the second-to reveal the aspect that most interests students in foreign language lessons. The survey was conducted anonymously, which increases the reliability of the information, since many teenagers are afraid of complaints in their direction, choosing, in their opinion, the "wrong" answer.
We can present the results of this survey clearly in the table (Appendix 2) and in the diagram (Appendix 3). Having studied the results obtained, we can note that most students study English in order to use it during trips and travels, as well as to better understand the peculiarities of the culture and traditions of the countries of the language being studied. The greatest interest in the lessons is the study of new words, comparing their meanings with the meanings of words in the Russian language, using the acquired vocabulary while reading texts, performing various speech exercises. In addition, country studies also occupies one of the first places among the interests of students. The survey showed that teenagers are interested in getting acquainted with the main sights, culture and traditions of foreign countries.
2.2 Conclusions
1. Most of the children of our age answered that they study English for traveling and in order to know more about the culture of foreign countries.
2. Among the interests in the first place was the desire of students to replenish their vocabulary in order to understand the content of stories, educational texts, as well as songs and videos in a foreign language.
3. It is important to note that they are already thinking about their future profession and realize that without knowledge of English it will be more difficult for them to find a good job.
4. In general, the survey showed that modern teenagers are interested in learning English, and see ways to apply it in practice.
Thus, most 6th grade students consider it necessary to learn English and have a clear idea of why they need it.
CONCLUSION
Summing up our work, I would like to note once again the importance of the English language in the modern world.
The XXI century is the time of the opening of borders and the unification of countries. Millions of Russian residents travel abroad for a variety of purposes: to rest on a tourist voucher, to work under contract in a Western company and, eventually, to Paris or Milan for the latest fashion collection! No matter what country a person goes to, he has to communicate with people. Historically, English has become the universal language of communication. At the airport, in a hotel, in a taxi, on the street - everywhere you can feel free and confident if there are at least a couple dozen English words in the luggage of your knowledge!
In addition, a person who knows a foreign language is highly valued when applying for employment.
Basic knowledge of English is laid at school. Having considered the peculiarities of teenage students, we came to the conclusion that it is very important for our peers to understand that English exists for real communication and practical use in their future profession, while traveling, listening to foreign music and reading foreign literature in the original.
The lack of interest in language among adolescents is usually associated with the lack of awareness of the possibility of practical application of language in real life situations. This can lead to failure in the subject.
To determine what goals our peers pursue, we conducted a questionnaire. It showed that most students want to learn English in order to use it while traveling, and they are also interested in learning about the traditions and culture of foreign countries in foreign language lessons.
According to the data obtained, it can also be judged that the majority of students of our school are interested in learning English, and understand why they need it, and in what areas they can apply their knowledge.
The goal set by us has been achieved.
