Abstract: The research material of
this work was the novel Daddy Long-Legs by Jean Webster. This novel
is great because it was written in an unusual form and is a letter
from a college student, created in the epistolary genre. The
analyzed block of letters covers two years of the heroine's life,
and those letters were selected for the study, the final blocks of
which are a bright example of deviation from etiquette
norms.
Key
words: masterpiece, orphan,
trustee, freshman, self-education, asylum, cast-off
clothes, miserable
life, instructor, author,
educated, love letter.
Alice Jane Chandler Webster,
perhaps better known under her pseudonym Jean Webster. She was the
eldest child of Annie Moffet Webster and Charles Luther Webster,
and spent her early childhood in a strongly matriarchal and
activist setting. Webster herself remained a lifelong supporter of
women’s suffrage and children’s institutional reform. Alice's
mother was niece to Mark Twain, and her father was Twain's business
manager and subsequently publisher of many of his
books.
I have read the book “Daddy
Long-Legs” by Jean Webster. We were given the task to read the book
by our English teacher. The amazing style of the story in the form
of letters and diary entries distinguishes this prose from the
usual literary forms. An orphan raised in an orphanage has not lost
faith in goodness and luck. Gifted by nature, she set a goal to
become a writer and achieved this goal. When I read this glorious
story, I payed attention to how Judy studied, mostly it was
self-education. She read and read and read. This book belongs to
the list of books that we need to know. The story has worldwide
fame. Films were made and performances staged, including the most
famous play on Broadway. Next, I want to share with you more about
the plot of the book. [1]
The story begins with the fact
that one of the trustees who came to the orphanage wanted to send
Jerusha to college. On the strength of that
impertinent paper, he has offered to send
Judy
to
college. Her
board and tuition will be paid
directly to the college, and Judy
will receive in addition
during the four years she
is there, an allowance of
thirty-five dollars a month. The money will be sent
to her
by the gentleman’s private
secretary once a month, and in return,
she
will write a letter of
acknowledgment once a month.
She loved college and she
loved her daddy for sending her — she was very, very happy, and so
excited every moment of the time that she could scarcely
sleep. Her room was up in a tower
that used to be the contagious ward before they built the new
infirmary. Judy didn't know the basic education that everyone
knows. For example, she never heard of Michael Angelo. Judy thought
he was an archangel, and the whole class laughed. She thought that
he sounds like an archangel. She was unfamiliar with the ordinary
life. To us, we are familiar, therefore she got into funny
situations. One of this situation was on the first day. When
somebody mentioned Maurice Maeterlinck, and Judy asked if she was a
Freshman. That joke has gone all over college.

In conclusion, I want to say
about my impression of the book. First of all, I am very obliged to
the author for such a masterpiece. When reading the novel, we can
guess that the author is an American writer. Because the novel uses
American English words. I also like the style of writing a novel -
in the form of letters. The language of the novel is easy to
understand. Also, the plot of the work is very interesting and
exciting. When you read the beginning of the novel, it's like
you're hooked, because every part of the novel is compelling. While
reading the book, we enlarged our vocabulary. The author used
words, expressions and phrases that we will need when speaking. I
think the main idea of the novel is to accept your fate. Because
the God ordains our destiny for us. We can't change it. No matter
how hard your fate is, you need to be strong. We are tested by
different situations. For example, in this novel Judy is an orphan.
But despite this, she is very kind, responsive, responsible and
hardworking. Nowadays there are many people who will break down at
any difficulty of life.
I`m very obliged to our
English teacher Aigul Bisembayevna for recommending to read this
book. Because we enlarged our vocabulary and our horizons in life.
And I want to finish my composition with a quote from the book
“Daddy Long-Legs” with the word Judy: “If you want to achieve
something, and you don`t give up, then in the end everything will
work out”.

Материалом исследования данной работы послужил
роман Джейн Уэбстер «Длинноногий Дядюшка»
(Daddy Long-Legs). Данный роман особенно интересен тем, что
написан в необычной форме и представляет собой письма ученицы
колледжа, т. е. создан в эпистолярном жанре. Анализируемый блок
писем охватывает два года из жизни героини, причем для исследования
выбраны те письма, заключительные блоки которых являются ярким
примером отступления от этикетных норм.
