Home Sweet Home”

A Home is where our stories begin, a cozy little place filled with warmth and love. It's the place where laughter and memories are made every single day. A home is a magical kingdom where families grow, and dreams take flight.

B In our homes, we have special places to stay close with our favourite books, where we can let our imaginations run wild and explore worlds beyond our wildest dreams. Our rooms are our little kingdoms, where we can create art and build castles.

C The kitchen is another magical place in our homes. It's the place where delicious smells carry through the air, and where our favourite meals are cooked with love. We can learn to cook with our parents, creating what we love with our own hands.

D Outside, our gardens are like fairy forests, filled with colourful flowers. We can play hide and seek, have picnics, and watch the stars twinkle in the night sky. Our homes go to the outdoor spaces where we can run, jump, and explore the wonders of nature.

E But most importantly, a home is where we are cared by the love and attention of our family. It's where we share our happiness, where we learn and grow, and where we feel safe and protected.

Helping …”

If your friend has a problem, you probably try to help him or her. However, do you knowthat animals also help each other?

In a film about animals, a zoologist explained that scientists were learning a lot about theways that animals behave. For example, he said that when he studied a group of dolphins, he sawsomething unusual. Dolphins need air to survive, but one of the dolphins in the group was tooweak to swim to the top of the water. So, several dolphins quickly swam under him and pushedhim to the top of the water where he could get air. Then, they held him there until he was strongenough to swim alone.A scientist in Africa told another example of animals helping each other.

The scientist was watching a local elephant eating some leaves from a tree. Suddenly, another elephantarrived. Animals often attack other animals that enter their territory and eat their food, so whathappened next surprised the scientist. The second elephant was hurt and could not get its ownfood, so the first elephant pulled a small tree from the ground and put it into the weak elephant’smouth.

For that reason, there are some questions to answer. When animals help one another, does italso improve their chances of survival or are they just being nice? These are just some of thequestions that scientists are still trying to answer.

1. According to the zoologist, scientists studied animals’ behavior. _______________________________________________

Leisure time

Hello! My name’s Johnny. I am thirteen years old, and I live in England.

I just want to talk about how my friends and I spend our free time. My best friends are Tom and David. They are in the same class as me.

Teenagers of ten complain they are bored and have nothing to do. I can’t understand them. I am never bored. If the weather is nice, we go for a walk or we ride our bikes. All of us like rollerblading. We often play football, basketball, or Frisbee in the park and when it is rainy, we go to the sport centre. We usually play table tennis or go swimming there.

If you play a musical instrument, it’s a good fun! I play the guitar and practice a lot.

At home, I usually listen to music or read magazines and books. Of course, as other teenagers,I often go on the Internet or play computer games but not always. It’s a pity that a lot of teenagers live their lives on several public sites like Facebook or Twitter! They had better make real friends!

In the evenings, I sometimes watch TV. I often invite my friends over for dinner or a cup of tea and we play chess. At the weekend, we go hiking; fishing or sometimes we go to the cinema. We like comedies.

It’s Alive!

Green roofs! What a great idea, and so simple. Why didn’t anybody think of this before? Well, actually they did. Green roofs, in the form of natural sod* roofs, have been around for ages. Nowadays, these living roofs, also called eco-roofs, are a bit more complex than those from the past, but they are still ‘sprouting up’ in cities all over the world.

A. Are green roofs expensive to build?

Green roofs are fairly expensive to construct and maintain (1) but with the money you save on heating and air-conditioning they pay for themselves in no time. And remember, even if you can’t afford to have a ‘real’ green roof at the moment, you can do your part for the environment now by planting flowers or vegetables in pots on the roof of your house or block of flats.

B. What’s so great about green roofs?

There are many benefits to having a green roof. To begin with, they look fantastic; they are a little patch of glorious (2) nature in the middle of an ugly concrete jungle. Secondly, they can reduce heating and cooling costs because they act as a kind of insulation for the building. Finally, green roofs give wildlife a place of their own, a natural habitat, in which to live.

C. What exactly are green roofs?

As you’ve probably already guessed, green roofs are not just roofs that have been painted green. By definition, a green roof is a roof of a building that is partly or totally covered in vegetation: grass, flowers, or any other kind of plant. Under the soil in which the vegetation grows are several layers which prevent (3) water and roots from damaging the original roof.

Match the words in bold (1-3) in the text to their meanings (a-d).

c) keep

d) start

READING Task: Read the text and answer the questions 1-6 below.

Most people have no more than 30 friends at any given time, and 400 over the whole of their lives. However, on social sites, most users have about 150 friends. If these numbers are correct, then friendship means different things in different situations.

One of the reasons for having more online friends than real friends is that online friendships don’t require much time and energy: it’s easy to accept friendships and keep them forever. Another possibility is that it’s difficult to say 'no' when somebody asks us to be their friend online, even if we feel we don't really know them. The fact that they ask us suggests that they do - consider us a friend, which is a nice feeling.

Online friendships are quite easy, but in the real-world decisions about friendships are harder to make. There are no rules about friendship. There are no guidelines about how to make friends, how to keep friendships going and to finish friendships if we want to move on. People have very different opinions about this: some people would die for their friends, and they value them more than family. Others say that friends are temporary, only there to help each other until they are no longer needed.

Because of these different definitions of friendship, it’s easy to be unhappy about our friendships. We may want them to be deeper or closer, or to have more friends in our lives. Sometimes we simply don’t have the time to develop our friendships, or we fear we have left it too late in life to start.

This dissatisfaction shows us how important friendships are for most of us. We shouldn’t think that it could be too late to build friendships. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that’s shared by many. Therefore, we shouldn’t be too frightened about starting to talk to people who in the future may become our friends: it’s likely that they too would like to get closer to us. Remember what people say: strangers are friends we have not yet.

Complete the sentences with NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS and/or A NUMBER from the text.

1. A majority of people tend to make ………... online friends.

2. Virtual relationships are popular because of the less spent ……………... .

3. There is a range of ………... about friendship to different people.

4. Sometimes people ………... that they are too old to make friends.

Choose the correct answer A, B, C or D.

A. different people define friendship in different ways.

B. online friendship becomes more important than real one.

C. there are a lot of strangers around them.

D. they can’t make new friends due to their age.

6. What does ‘Strangers are friends we have not met yet’ mean?

READING Read the article about scientific research about volcanoes and complete the task below.

Collecting Information about Volcanoes Is Difficult

For most volcanoes, we don’t know enough. The last time volcano Agung erupted was in 1963. That was before we had all the tools, we have today to measure it. Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted in 1991. Before that, it had not erupted for 500 years. In 1991, two months of changes came before the eruption. Ash burst from the top. The volcano's shape changed. Earthquakes were bigger. They also happened more often. We know more about Mount St. Helens volcano in the U.S. Scientists have watched it for many years. They can now make good predictions about it. They know that if there are small earthquakes happening it will erupt in two weeks. We don’t know exactly what Agung volcano did before its 1963 eruption. These events could mean an eruption is coming in two weeks. Or it could be months or even years.

Correct Predictions Are Important

Today, we use satellites to study volcanoes. Satellites give scientists a good look at the volcano from space. They can’t give smaller details, though. Satellites usually only pass over a given volcano once every week or two. The other tools we use cost a lot of money. We cannot have them everywhere. Predicting volcanic eruptions correctly is very important. If it erupts before people leave, they could die. They need to know before it happens. What if they leave and the volcano doesn’t erupt? That can be a different problem. This happened in Mammoth Mountain, California, in 1984. People stopped visiting. It cost money for everyone to leave. The community lost millions of dollars. The eruption never happened. To predict eruptions correctly, we need to know about each volcano. Without that, we have to compare with other volcanoes. Nothing beats really getting to know each volcano, though.

(Tracy K.P. Gregg is a professor of geology at the State University of New York at Buffalo.)

Choose the best answer A, B, C or D.

1. What do scientists know about Mount St. Helens volcano?

A) Small earthquakes will cause eruption. B) The shape of the volcano is changed.

C) The last earthquakes were bigger. D) The last eruption was 500 years ago.

2. Which word could replace the word “predictions” WITHOUT changing the meaning of the first sentence?

They can now make good predictions about it. They know that if there are small earthquakes happening it will erupt in two weeks.”

A) answers B) guesses C) tips D) truths

3. Which question is answered in these sentences?

Predicting volcanic eruptions correctly is very important. If it erupts before people leave, they could die. They need to know before it happens.

A) How can people predict volcanoes’ eruption?

B) What can happen if volcanoes erupt earlier than predicted?

C) What can happen if volcanoes do not erupt at all?

D) Where are the most dangerous volcanoes located?

READING Task. Read the article about gender equality and choose the correct answer (A-D).

Why are we unequal?

A. Today gender equality is one of the hotly discussed issues in the world. It is considered to be the most important human right to ensure peace and harmony in society and leads to productivity and sustainable economic growth of every country. But why does humanity still face gender inequality matters worldwide?

B. There are a number of reasons which might cause gender imbalance in society. On the top, family values could be the root for this scene. Even though the world is changing due to socio-economic developments, most countries do not ignore their cultural factor. Families treat sons as a prospective breadwinner whereas daughters are brought up to be a good homemaker. These outdated ideas still prevent the society from establishing new values which may be more relevant for the future generation.

C. Next, gender upbringing stereotypes determine a society how boys and girls should and would behave. Boys are expected to be strong, competitive and sometimes aggressive. Girls should be insecure and low intelligent who have to obey her husband in the future. Therefore, unknowingly we will present dolls and kitchen dishes for girls whilst boys play with construction sets which can block girls from acquiring very important skills.

D. Lastly, gender stereotypes can distribute men and women’s potentials irregularly. Still there are “typical” jobs for men like programming or engineering and for women such as teachers, nurses and accountants which, hence, cause imbalance in earnings among both genders.

A 5700 year-old human genome and oral microbiome from chewed birch pitch

Birch pitch is a black-brown substance obtained by heating birch bark and has been used as an adhesive and hafting agent as far back as the Middle Pleistocene. Small lumps of this organic material are commonly found on archaeological sites in Scandinavia and beyond, and while their use is still debated, they often show tooth imprints, indicating that they were chewed. Freshly produced birch pitch hardens on cooling and it has been suggested that chewing was a means to make it pliable again before using it, e.g. for hafting composite stone tools. Medicinal uses have also been suggested, since one of the main constituents of birch pitch, betulin, has antiseptic properties. This is supported by a large body of ethnographic evidence, which suggests that birch pitch was used as a natural antiseptic for preventing and treating dental ailments and other medical conditions. The oldest examples of chewed pitch found in Europe date back to the Mesolithic period and chemical analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) has shown that many of them were made from birch (Betula pendula).

The recent research has shown that pieces of chewed birch pitch contain ancient human DNA, which can be used to link the material culture and genetics of ancient populations. The current study analyses a further piece of chewed birch pitch, which was discovered at a Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic site in southern Denmark and demonstrates that it does not only contain ancient human DNA, but also microbial DNA that reflects the oral microbiome of the person who chewed the pitch, as well as plant and animal DNA which may have derived from a recent meal. The DNA is so exceptionally well preserved that it became possible to recover a complete ancient human genome from the sample (sequenced to an average depth of coverage of 2.3×), which is particularly significant since, so far, no human remains have been recovered from the site. The results highlight the potential of chewed birch pitch as a source of ancient human and non-human DNA, which can be used to shed light on the population history, health status, and even subsistence strategies of ancient populations.

The chewed birch pitch contains not only ancient human DNA but also microbial DNA reflecting the oral microbiome of the individual who chewed it. Furthermore, plant and animal DNA found in the pitch suggests it may provide valuable information about the diet and subsistence strategies of ancient populations. The exceptional preservation of the DNA within the pitch sample enabled the recovery of a complete ancient human genome, even in the absence of human remains at the site.

These findings open up new avenues for studying the population history and health status of ancient populations. By linking material culture with genetics, chewed birch pitch offers a unique window into the lives and practices of our ancestors. It provides a tangible connection to their daily activities, medicinal practices, and dietary choices.

Identify the given statements as TRUE or FALSE. Write the correct option next to the statement.

1.Birch pitch is a synthetic material created through a chemical process and was introduced during the Middle Pleistocene. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

2.The tooth imprints found on chewed birch pitch suggest that it was used for medicinal purposes.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

3.Chemical analysis has shown that most examples of chewed pitch found in Europe were made from birch (Betula pendula). _____________________________________________________________________________________________________

4.Recent research has successfully recovered a complete ancient human genome from a chewed birch pitch sample.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

5.The DNA found in chewed birch pitch can only provide information about the oral microbiome of ancient populations. ________________________________________________________________________________________________

6.The study of chewed birch pitch does not offer any insights into the dietary choices of ancient populations.

FACT SHEET

World Wide Fund for Nature International (WWF)

Whales

We know little about the earliest whales, but fossil remains and comparative anatomical studies indicate that they were probably descended from small, primitive, bear-like animals. Today’s whales have evolved into mammals which live in the water. Commercial whalers have exploited almost every whale species, causing many populations to come close to extinction. As a result, international trade in whale products, once of enormous volume, has now ended. Both natural and synthetic substitutes are available for all whale products and are competitively priced. At the annual meeting in 1982, after many years of debate, the IWC (International Whaling Commission) voted to ban all commercial whaling for an indefinite period from 1986.

Tiger

The Tiger (Panthera tigris) is one of the cat Felidae family and lives only in Asia. Despite its wide range and adaptability, the tiger is severely threatened today. It is so dependent on cover that itcannot survive where people have cleared the land for agriculture. The tiger is still widely hunted down, despite being legally protected in almost every country where it is found. In Chinese popular medicine, every part of a tiger’s body is valued and this has made hunting even more popular. Three of the eight tiger subspecies have already been wiped out and a fourth is very near extinction. WWF is promoting projects to save these subspecies.

Foxes and Wolves

Foxes and wolves belong to the Canidae, or wild dog, family. Of the 14 fox subspecies, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the most wide-spread. Though the red fox is heavily hunted and trapped for its fur, populations have remained the same. The coyote or prairie wolf (Canis latrans) is found throughout the United States, southern Canada, and northern Central America. The population is large and increasing even though people hunt it for fur, sport, and to reduce loss of livestock and poultry. WWF and mCN (the World Conservation Union’s Canid Specialist Group) both believe that most species require legally enforced protection measures. It is also necessary to protect their natural habitat and to increase the public’s awareness of the problems confronting these animals.

Dolphins and Porpoises

Dolphins and porpoises are marine mammals belonging to the cetacean family which also includes whales. They are found in oceans, estuaries and rivers. One of the threats facing dolphins and porpoises is hunting. As human populations have grown, more indigenous people fish in order to feed their families. More aggressive fishing methods have also been developed, such as the use of rifles. Other serious threats include water pollution, destruction and fragmentation of habitat through such activities as dam building, and general disturbance by humans which reduce food supplies. The largest catches of cetaceans, however, occur by chance while people are trying to catch other fish. Concern about this type of incidental catch led to the 1989 UN General Assembly adopting a resolution that called for the end of large-scale driftnet fishing by 30 June 1992.
