Short story
What will I be when I grow up? When I grow up I’ll work with animals. I don’t know which job yet.
Maybe like my brother. He’s a special vet. He looks after scary snakes, some just out of eggs. He says that snakes are easy as they don’t have any legs. My father is a scientist. He works to save rare birds. Some are really clever and can even say some words. ‘How do you do?’ My mother is a dog groomer. She loves dogs big or small. Once she styled a poodle. It looked just like a ball. My sister, she trains dolphins. They practise in the pool. She hears the dolphins talk and sing. That sounds really cool! So many animal jobs to choose but which one’s right for me? Because I’m only ten years old, I’ll have to wait and see!
A) Styles dogs as a profession B) Works with rare birds C) Takes care of snakes
D) Desires to work with animals, but hasn't decided yet E) Trains dolphins

READING Task 2. Read the article “How to be a good Listener” by Moshe Ratson, who wrote it on WikiHow. Based on the information in the article, choose the best answer from the given options (A, B, C, or D) for each question. It's not always easy to be a good friend. Here are nine rules to help.
1.Keep your promises. If you say you'll meet with a friend, don't change your mind.
2.Say you're sorry if you do something wrong. Don't act as if you're perfect. If you've done something wrong, agree with it.
3.Talk about your feelings. If something troubles you, don't be afraid to talk about it. Tell your friend how you feel.
4.Don't gossip. If your friend tells you a secret, don't tell anyone else.
5.Be a good listener. Listen carefully to what your friend has to say.
6.Be there when they need you. If your friend is in the hospital, visit. If your friend's dog runs away, help find it. Let your friends see they can count on you.
7.Give your friend some space. Let your friend be alone sometimes. Don't worry if your friends have lots of other friends. It doesn't mean they don't care about you.
8.Learn to forgive. First, let them know how you feel. If your friends are sorry for what they did, you should forgive them.
9.Stay in touch. If your friends move away, be sure to stay in touch. Write them or call them. They will be very happy to hear from you!
1. What is the purpose of Rule #2 mentioned in the text? [1]
A) To develop perfectness B) To agree with your mistakes

Author: I love watching movies. At the cinema, on TV or on my computer. I'm a big movie fan and love all the news of my favourite movie stars.
I like all kinds of movies - Hollywood blockbusters, black and white movies from the 50s, independent movies... They're all good.
Recently I've got into watching foreign movies. I like the films that come out of Bollywood - they're very different. The first film I saw at the movie theatre was Star Wars. I was amazed at the special effects.
Nowadays, so many movies have such good computer graphics that we forget how special the effects are. One of my favourite ways of relaxing is to rent the latest DVD and sit on the sofa with a big bag of potato chips. The sound has to be up to the max and the lights have to be off.

Space Exploration - Voyagers 1 and 2
The Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts left Earth in 1977 on a five-year mission. Their mission was to reach Jupiter and Saturn and send information back to earth about them. Jupiter and Saturn are the hugest planets in the solar system. In 1981, they finished their mission. But, they kept going. Scientists decided to plan a longer trip for them: they would travel even further until they reached Uranus and Neptune.
Voyagers 1 and 2 are very smart. They were built with no moving parts. They use the breakdown, or the decay, of the space element “plutonium” to create fuel. They can each get the equivalent of 30,000 miles per gallon of gasoline! They were made to be able to work in radioactive environments. The “gas giants” – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune – are very radioactive places.
So far, Voyagers 1 and 2 have sent information back to Earth from farther away than any other spacecraft. Scientists have learned about the atmospheres, interiors, and rings of the gas giant stars. They have also learned about the moon of these stars. Scientists think that they will keep getting information from Voyagers 1 and 2 until about 2020. At that time, the power on the Voyagers 1 and 2 will not be strong enough to send information back to Earth.
1. The Voyagers started their mission in _________________.[1]
2. Scientists plan that the Voyagers would go to _________________.[1]
3. The Voyagers use the element _________________ to create fuel.[1]
4. The _________________ are highly radioactive areas.[1]
5. Information from the Voyagers could reach Earth _________________ compared to any other spacecraft.[1]
6. It is believed that information from the Voyagers will come before ___________.[1] _____/ [6]

Reality TV – love it or leave it
The first reality TV show in the world was called Expedition Robinson and it was shown in Sweden in 1997. Half the population of the country watched the final episode and a new kind of TV programme was born. Two years later in Holland, the first series of Big Brother was filmed. Again, it was a fantastic success and the final programme was watched by 15 million people. There are now more than 20 countries around the world which have Big Brother or Survivor (Expedition Robinson) on their TV screens. The ordinary people who take part in the programmes are known by millions of people in their own countries and reality TV has become big, big business.
For the TV producers, reality TV is a dream come true because many of the programmes cost nothing to make. At some point, the television viewers are asked to telephone the programme – to vote or to apply to take part in the show. It is the cost of these telephone calls that pays for the shows. One of the most popular shows is Pop Idol (the programme is called different things in different countries). In the show, a group of attractive young people are made into pop stars. TV viewers vote for their favourite person on the show. The winner makes a record, his or her pictures are published on the covers of magazines, millions of copies of the record are sold and then….they are quickly forgotten.
But not everyone is happy about reality TV. In Portugal, two TV channels got into trouble because they showed too much of the private lives of the people in the shows. In France, reality TV is called ‘rubbish TV’ and the studios of Loft Story (Big Brother) were attacked three times in one week. In Greece, Big Brother was described as ‘an insult to human rights and civilization’. But, despite the problems, reality TV continues to do well in most countries and it will be here for some time to come.

4. Who might be contestants of popular show Pop Idol? [1]

C. Child D. People of all ages

D. As individuals we can all find ways to help prevent global warming.
E. We should rely more on nuclear power.
F. We should adapt to climate change, not try to prevent it.
______ [6]
Transcript
Henry. I've absolutely no doubt that global warming is happening and that it's causing the world's climate to change. Just look at the number of irregular weather phenomena in recent years - hurricanes, storms, floods, drought, and so on. It's beyond doubt - to my mind anyway - that it's caused by human activity. It's imperative that we act now to prevent it getting much worse. Governments should invest massively in renewable energy, set up wind farms, tidal barrages, and so on. And don't fall into the trap of thinking that nuclear energy is the answer to our problems, because there's the problem of disposing of the nuclear waste.
There are lots of ways to reduce your own carbon footprint too. But to make a real impact on global warming, we have to make radical changes to the way we live. For one, we should travel less. Don't go abroad on holiday. And if you have to travel, avoid flying if you can use a train or coach instead. Second, become a vegetarian. Meat production causes global warming. How? When farm animals digest food, they release vast amounts of methane, which is a very potent greenhouse gas.
Millie. I must say I'm a bit of a global warming sceptic. I know I'm in a minority, but I do think people exaggerate the problem. I agree that the earth is getting warmer but I'm not 100 per cent sure that human activity is entirely responsible for it. I think there are natural processes at work too. In the past, the earth has been much hotter - and much colder - than it is today, and that had nothing to do with us.
And anyway, I don't think there's a great deal we can do about global warming. Governments waste huge amounts of money on inefficient renewable energy schemes, like installing wind turbines and solar panels. Of course we should try to conserve energy, and avoid polluting the atmosphere and oceans, but you can't persuade people to change the way they live. Basically, I don't think we should worry too much about climate change. We just have to learn to live with it.
Zak. The vast majority of scientists have linked the increase in the earth's temperature with CO2 emissions, so I guess it must be true. The problem is what to do about it. It's all very well for us in the developed world to say we must cut carbon emissions and rely less on fossil fuels. We've already benefited from centuries of economic growth based on high energy consumption. What about India and China? They are going through a kind of industrial revolution, as we did. What right have we to tell them what to do? Especially if we don't practise what we preach.
I think it's down to each of us to do our bit: use public transport to get to school and work, insulate our homes, reuse and recycle. Every little bit helps. As for what the Government should do, personally I think the answer is to build more nuclear power stations. We'll have used up all the natural resources like coal, gas and oil by 2100, so I think well have no choice anyway.

READING Task: Read the text and answer the questions 1-6 below. Reading: https://en.islcollective.com/english-esl-worksheets/search/charity?
Proyecto Gatto (Catt Project)
We are a non-profit organisation that struggles to relocate street animals (particularly cats) giving them full medical assistance (including psychological) and looking after them until they get to a new, loving home. All the cats in our care receive vaccines, medical care, behavioural evaluations and sterilization before being adopted.
We also work in social programmes and a variety of projects to promote a culture of respect to all kinds of animal life, especially focused on children. We believe that respect for animals should be learnt at early stages of life so it becomes a constant for us.
Our motto: “For a second chance” clearly expresses our purpose and reminds us of how this organisation started: as a small shelter due to the influence of one cat, we adopted who grew up with us and was very loving and helpful towards other street cats. We felt, and still feel, that we have to give back to animals a bit of the love and comprehension they give us.
Being a private non-profit organisation, we do not receive any funds from federal or local government dependencies. We depend completely from private donations, volunteers, fundraising events (such as raffles) and the sale of some products for pets: toys, beds, blankets. You can cooperate with us and adopt a cat. More info at: www.proyectogatto.com.mx
Write T (True) or F (False).
1. This organisation helps to find shelters for street animals only. ____ [1]
2. The adopted animals get all necessary medical assistance before going to their new homes. ____ [1]
3. People should be taught to respect animals from an early childhood. ____ [1]
4. The organisation’s motto is related to its programme. ____ [1]
5. Although it’s a private organisation, they get some financial assistance from the government.____ [1]
6. Anyone can adopt a cat and collaborate with Proyecto Gatto. ____ [1] _____ [6]
WRITING Task: Write a problem solution essay. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write between 130-160 words in your essay.
Charitable organizations do not have enough money to help everyone who is in need. What problems are associated with this and what are some possible solutions?

Speaker 1
Some children just can’t live without it. They really are hooked. The colours die away, and your kids scream in protest. It’s as if you’ve just taken a drug away from them. We’ve got to accept the fact that these machines are having a terrible effect on children’s standards of literacy. Kids just aren’t interested in reading these days. They feel they have to do it to pass tests. So they just stare at the screen, pushing those buttons. They don’t have to use their brains or their memory. These gadgets are the cause of so much underachievement in today’s society.
Speaker 2
I realise that a lot of these pay-for-free games are designed to become addictive. You play for free, but once you’ve invested time and effort into your game, you start paying real money to progress further into the game. With people spending huge sums of money on virtual items, I can see why governments might want to regulate games like these. But on the other side, these gaming companies are businesses, and they need to make money. Governments should focus on the industry’s business model, rather than the game content. It’s a balancing act, because the last thing you want to do is stamp out the creativity of small companies.
Speaker 3
A lot of games are attractive because the virtual world is fairer than the real world. Your success isn’t determined by your age, social status or education. Your peers are loyal, and when you do something good, you are instantly rewarded, so there’s a real sense of achievement. The sense of community in the gaming world is actually really strong, and what we really need to do is bring some of this spirit of working together and accomplishing tasks into the real world. People should stop criticizing these games and start thinking about how we can incorporate the positive spirit of gaming into our real lives.

Human Adaptation to Space
Many astronauts suffer physical problems on these missions, even if they are in space for just a few months. More than two-thirds of all astronauts suffer from motion sickness¹ while traveling in space. In an environment without gravity, the amount of blood and other fluids in the body ends up being distributed differently after a long period of time in this environment. More fluid than normal ends up in the face, neck, and chest, resulting in a puffy face and a slightly enlarged heart.
For the duration of their mission, astronauts experience conditions that affect their health. For example, their bones get weaker and they may lose muscle. Being in a weightless environment means that astronauts tend not to use the muscles they rely upon on Earth. This, combined with the shift of fluid to the upper body and the resulting loss of essential minerals (such as calcium), causes bones to weaken. As a result, many astronauts are unable to walk properly for a few days upon their return to Earth. In addition, they are exposed to radiation from the sun, which is more intense without the Earth's atmosphere to protect them. This puts them at a higher risk of cancer.
In addition to physical difficulties, astronauts who travel for long periods may also suffer from psychological stress. Space travel requires astronauts to be very focused, balanced people. The irregular sleep, long working hours, and the lack of night and day can cause emotional issues. Being able to control one's emotions is an important characteristic for an astronaut.
A major factor that affects astronauts' mental health is time. Usually, astronauts spend a few months in space at a time, but longer expeditions would require astronauts to spend significantly more time inside a spaceship. For example, a round-trip expedition to Mars could take about three years. Being 25in a small space for such a long period of time is not healthy. Research has shown that travelers on such long journeys, such as sailors or explorers in the Arctic, have an above-average chance of suffering from depression.

Dialogue 1:
Customer. Hi. I wonder if you can help me?
Assistant. Sure. What’s the problem?
C. My smartphone is locked. If I put the passcode in, nothing happens.
A. Right. Can I see?
C. Yes. Look: 5-2-6-1. Nothing.
A. Hmm. This phone automatically locks if an incorrect passcode is entered three times. Are you sure you’ve got
the right passcode?
C. Yes, I’m sure. But my three-year-old son was playing with it this morning …
A. Ah, well that could be the problem. I expect he’s pressed some keys and locked your phone. Anyway, I’m afraid I can’t help you. We can’t unlock phones here. You need to contact your phone network. They’re the only people who can unlock it.
C. How long does it take?
A. It’s hard to say. I reckon you should allow at least three or four days.
C. Oh dear! That’s quite a long time. Are you sure you can’t do anything to help me?
A. I’m afraid not.
Dialogue 2:
Man. Can I help you?
Woman. Oh, yes. Do you live around here?
M. You could say that. That’s my house!
W. I’m trying to find the Victoria Hotel. My satnav says it’s up this road …
M. But this isn’t a road. You can see that! And you’re ruining my grass!
W. Are you sure this isn’t the Victoria Hotel?
M. Of course I’m sure! I live here!!
W. Oh, how annoying. All right, I’ll turn around.
M. Don’t turn around, you’ll ruin the plants. Just go backwards.
W. All right. Look, it isn’t my fault. I’m just following the satnav. Do you know where the hotel is?
M. I think there’s a hotel around the next corner. But it isn’t called the Victoria Hotel. It’s the Empire Hotel.
W. The Empire Hotel. That’s the one!
M. You said the Victoria.
W. I know, but I’m pretty sure it’s called the Empire. Thank you. Bye!
M. Don’t drive over my … roses.
Dialogue 3:
Girl. Have you been using my MP3 player?
Boy. Er … no.
G. Yes, you have!
B. Well, maybe once or twice. How do you know?
G. Because all the songs are different!
B. I added a few songs, you’re right. Do you like them?
G. Not really. Why did you erase all my songs?
B. I didn’t erase anything. I just copied about ten new songs onto it.
G. You did erase them. Look – there are only ten songs on here now, and they’re yours. Mine aren’t here.
B. Oh, I’m sorry. Never mind – you’ve got a back-up of your songs on your computer, haven’t you?
G. No, I haven’t! I loaded them onto the MP3 player from a friend’s tablet.
B. That’s stealing.
G. It isn’t stealing. He said it was OK.
B. I don’t mean stealing from your friend. I mean stealing from the people who made the songs. It’s called copyright theft and it’s damaging …
G. Look, that isn’t the point! Don’t use my MP3 player without asking!
Resource: Solutions. Intermediate. 3rd Edition. Unit 5C. Tim Falla and Paul A Davies. Oxford Exam Support.
READING Task: Read the text and answer questions 1-6.
Paragraph 1. GMO stands for genetically modified organism. A GMO is any plant or animal whose genes have been changed in a lab. Genes are the building block of all living things. In a person, a gene will decide many things, like hair color or height. Genes also can decide if someone develops certain diseases. Animals, fruits and vegetables are all made of genes.
Paragraph 2. Most processed food in the United States, like soup and soda, contains some GMOs. Foods such as peanut butter, blueberries, wheat bread, milk, cheese and vegetables generally do not. Scientists say there is no evidence that GMOs are dangerous. A 2008 report by the National Academy of Sciences found no health problems from GMOs. The Academy of Sciences is a respected group of scientists.
Paragraph 3. There are two sides in the fight over GMOs. On one side are food companies which do not want GMO information on food labels. These companies sometimes make products with GMOs. They claim that GMO crops grow better. They also say that GMOs protect crops against diseases and bugs. For example, changing the genes of corn can protect it from worms. Farmers who use GMO corn do not need to use as much bug spray and they can grow more corn.
Paragraph 4. On the other side are some farmers, food lovers and some companies. They support the labeling. They say GMOs are not safe to eat. On November 4, voters in Oregon and Colorado will decide whether to pass laws. They would force companies to put labels on food that has been genetically changed.
Paragraph 5. So far, food companies have successfully fought labeling. One of the biggest is Monsanto. It makes genetically modified seeds. Kraft Foods and Coca-Cola are on the side of Monsanto. They sell food with GMOs in them. They say labels might discourage people from buying food with GMOs. They 23 worry that people will think the food is unsafe. Companies also say labeling will make food more expensive. However, label supporters say people have a right to know what is in their food. They think people should have the information to help them decide what to buy.
Task 1: Answer the question. Circle the best answer.
What is the best title for the article?
A. Food fight over labels
B. Benefits and drawbacks of GMO food
C. Coca-Cola is against labeling
D. Farmers for organic food [1]
Task 2. Choose the best heading for Paragraphs 1-5 from the list of headings below.
List of Headings
A. Merits of GMO food
B. What do we need to know before?
C. Both sides want to be right
D. We are eating them already
E. It is time to make a decision

Solving the Longitude Problem

The Challenge of Finding Longitude

The Unlikely Contender and His Journey to Success
1. __________ [1]
WHEN THE ROYAL OBSERVATORY at Greenwich, England, was founded in 1675, part of its charter was to find the so-much-desired longitude of places. The first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed, used clocks fitted with anchor escapements to time the exact moments that stars crossed the celestial meridian, an imaginary line that connects the poles of the celestial sphere and defines the due-south point in the night sky. This allowed him to gather more accurate information on star positions than had hitherto been possible by making angular measurements with sextants or quadrants alone.
2. __________ [1]
Although navigators could find their latitude (their position north or south of the equator) at sea by gauging the altitude of the sun or the polestar, the heavens did not provide such a straightforward solution for finding longitude. Storms and currents often confounded attempts to keep track of distance and direction traveled across oceans. Thus, in 1714, through an act of Parliament, Britain offered substantial prizes for practical solutions to finding longitude at sea. The largest prize, 20,000 (which is equivalent to about 12 million today), would be given to the inventor of an instrument that could determine a ship's longitude to within half a degree, or 30 31 nautical miles, when reckoned at the end of a voyage to a port in the West Indies, whose longitude could be accurately ascertained using proved land-based methods.
3. __________ [1]
The great reward attracted a deluge of harebrained schemes. Hence, the Board of Longitude, the committee appointed to review promising ideas, held no meetings for more than 20 years. Two approaches, however, had long been known to be theoretically sound. The first, called the lunar-distance method, involved precise observations of the moon's position in relation to the stars to determine the time at a reference point from which longitude could be measured; the other required a very accurate clock to make the same determination. Because the earth rotates every 24 hours, or 15 degrees in an hour, a two-hour time difference represents a 30-degree difference in longitude. The seemingly overwhelming obstacles to keeping accurate time at sea--among them the often violent motions of ships, extreme changes in temperature, and variations in gravity at different latitudes--led English physicist Isaac Newton and his followers to believe that the lunar-distance method, though problematic, was the only viable solution.
4. __________ [1]
Newton was wrong, however. In 1737 the board finally met for the first time to discuss the work of a most unlikely candidate, a Yorkshire carpenter named John Harrison. Harrison's bulky longitude timekeeper had been used on a voyage to Lisbon and on the return trip had proved its worth by correcting the navigator's dead reckoning of the ship's longitude by 68 miles. Its maker, however, was dissatisfied. Instead of asking the board for a West Indies trial, he requested and received financial support to construct an improved machine. A second sea trial in 1764 confirmed his success. Harrison was reluctantly granted 10,000. Only when King George III intervened in 1773 did he receive the remaining prize money. Harrison's breakthrough inspired further developments. By 1790 the marine chronometer was so refined that its fundamental design never needed to be changed.

Secrets of Happy Brain
The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains have developed this way because threats, like dangerous animals, had a more immediate effect on our ancestors’ survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you likely know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy? Research suggests that our level of happiness depends partly on factors we cannot control – our genes and our life circumstances. But our level of happiness is also shaped by the choices we make. If you’ve been chasing wealth, fame, good looks, material things, and power, you may be looking for happiness in all the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following seven habits make people happier. People who form close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of friends we have is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually involve the sharing of feelings, mutual respect, acceptance, trust, fun and empathy. People who make a habit of caring for the wellbeing of others tend to be happier. This might involve volunteering for an organization or reaching out to support friends and family on a regular basis. People who exercise regularly improve both their physical and mental well-being. Some research has shown that exercise can be as effective as medication in treating depression. When we are so interested in an activity we enjoy that we lose track of time, we are in a state of flow. The activity could be making art, playing piano, surfing, or playing a game. People who experience flow in their work or hobbies tend to be happier. People who include spirituality in their daily life tend to be happier. Practicing spirituality is a way of recognizing and trying to understand the wonder and beauty of existence. Some people do this by going to a place of worship or praying. Some people practice yoga or meditation. Some people go for long walks in nature. People are more likely to be happy if they know what their strengths are and use them regularly. People who set goals and use their strengths to achieve them tend to be happier. People are especially happy when they can use their strengths to serve the greater good. People who think positively by being grateful, mindful, and optimistic are more likely to be happy. Being grateful means being thankful. Being mindful means being open to, focusing on, and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful about the future.

History of timekeeping
Since ancient times, humans have been fascinated by the movement of the stars and its connection to the passage of time. The recording of time has allowed people to observe the heavens and track the progress of civilization. Natural events in the environment, such as seasonal changes and animal behavior, also helped to divide the year into distinct periods. Early methods of timekeeping, like Egyptian shadow clocks and obelisks, relied on the sun's movement to measure time. However, these methods were limited to daylight hours and clear weather conditions. The early inventions were made to divide the day or the night into different periods in order to regulate work or ritual, so the lengths of the time periods varied greatly from place to place and from one culture to another.
Oil lamps
There is archaeological evidence of oil lamps about 4,000 BCE, and the Chinese were using oil for heating and lighting by 2,000 BCE. Oil lamps are still significant in religious practices, symbolic of the journey from darkness and ignorance to light and knowledge. The shape of the lamps changed over time, and some were designed to measure the passing of time by checking the oil level.
Candle Clocks
Marked candles were used for telling the time in China from the sixth century CE. There is a popular story that King Alfred the Great invented the candle clock, but we know they were in use in England from the tenth century CE. However, the burning speed of candles could change due to draughts, and the quality of the wax. Life oil lamps, candles were used to mark the passage of time from one event to another, rather than tell the time of day.
Water Clocks
Water clocks, also known as clepsydras, were invented around 1,500 BCE and relied on a steady flow of water to measure time. The clepsydra could be marked with measurements or have a separate receptacle for the water. While more reliable than candles or oil lamps, the water flow still depended on the pressure from the container's water level. In China, from 200 to 1300 CE, advancements were made in water clock technology for astronomical and astrological purposes.
Unlike candles or oil lamps, the water flow in water clocks did not depend on the pressure from the container's water level. Instead, it was regulated by a separate mechanism that ensured a consistent flow of water. Water clocks, unlike candles or oil lamps, did not rely on the pressure from the container's water level to regulate the water flow.
There are various theories about how the 24 hour day developed. The fact that the day was divided into 12 hours might be because 12 is a factor of 60, and both the Babylonian and Egyptian civilisations recognised a zodiac cycle of 12 constellations. In classical Greek and Roman times they used twelve hours from sunrise to sunset; but since summer days and winter nights are longer than winter days and summer nights, the lengths of the hours varied throughout the year.

Interviewer: Ah, good morning Pia Marcotti, isn't it?
Pia Marcotti: Yes. Good morning.
Interviewer: I'm John Reeves. I manage the sales department here at Roscoe International. You can call me John.
Pia Marcotti: Okay, John.
Interviewer: Have you already been shown around the company?
Pia Marcotti: Yes. I got here at nine a.m. and Susie gave me a tour of the place.
Interviewer: And what did you think.
Pia Marcotti: A lot bigger than I thought it would be.
Interviewer: Yes. A lot of people say that. Now we have over 50 people working for us here. Did you bring your CV.
Pia Marcotti: I sent it by e-mail last week.
Interviewer: Yes, of course. I was reading it only yesterday. Now, where is it? Here it is. Here we are. Pia Marcotti twenty-six years old, born in Rome. Ok, let's see, where did you hear about Roscoe International?
Pia Marcotti: My brother worked for you a couple of years ago and has always spoken well of you.
Interviewer: Luigi Marcotti? Yes, I remember him. How long did he work here for.
Pia Marcotti: I think it was about ten months. Now he's living in the UK. He's been working for a magazine in London for around a year.
Interviewer: You'll say hi to him for me, won't you?
Pia Marcotti: Ok, sure.
Interviewer: Now tell me something about your work experience, Pia.
Pia Marcotti: Well, I worked in the offices of my mother's company when I left university.
Interviewer: And what sort of company does your mother run?
Pia Marcotti: It's caterers. She does the catering for weddings, graduations, funerals, that type of thing.
Interviewer: And how long did you work there for?
Pia Marcotti: About a year or so, they put me on the phones. And I was also responsible for all the advertising and our leaflets, business cards, and the website.
Interviewer: So, you didn't do any cooking?
Pia Marcotti: No. They kept me a long way from the kitchen.
Interviewer: So, what did you do after that?
Pia Marcotti: Well, I travelled for a little while, mostly in Europe and a little in South America.
Interviewer: How long did you go travelling for?
Pia Marcotti: Oh, it wasn't too long, maybe about six months. I had a job that was going to start at the end of the year, so I had about six months free. So, I thought, why not.
Interviewer: Did you have any problems with the languages where you went?
Pia Marcotti: Not really. I speak Italian and Spanish quite well.
Interviewer: How long have you been studying those languages?
Pia Marcotti: Well, my father is Italian, so I am fluent in Italian. I have studied Spanish for about seven years, so I can get by pretty well in that too.
Interviewer: Actually, we do have a lot of business with Sicily. So, your Italian could be really important.
Pia Marcotti: I would really like the chance to use my Italian for work.
Interviewer: What did you do when you came back from your travels?
Pia Marcotti: Well, as I said before, I already had another job lined up, and that was in a small shoe company just outside town.
Interviewer: Bradley footwear. It's called, isn't it?
Pia Marcotti: Bradford footwear.
Interviewer: Ah, yes. Here it is. It says here you worked in their sales department. How long did you
do that for?
Pia Marcotti: I was there for three years, and I worked in the sales department for two of those three years.
Interviewer: Did you enjoy the work?
Pia Marcotti: Well, it was fun at the beginning, but it's not a very large company, and they only have a few customers in the region, so it got pretty repetitive after a while. That's why working for an international company like yourselves would really interest me.
Interviewer: Ok, let's go and get a cup of coffee, and we can continue this conversation afterwards.
